Question

Copy a Profile to another profile

Asked by: jamesPeck

I would like to copy UserA's profile to UserB's profile so that UserB has what UserA has.  I tried copying it with the profile area in win2k and it copied most of the stuff except outlook didnt work properly.  Are there any utilities out there to copy everything?

Thanks

by: garfieldcooperPosted on 2004-02-02 at 10:54:07ID: 10254771

I do this by copying the whole contents of a user folder to the new user folder

I log on as someone different then the two users in question.  (as and admin)

then i go to Documents and Settings and copy the contents of USER A folder and paste it into USER B

Logon as User B and you have the same settings, favorites, etc. as USER A

by: PeteLongPosted on 2004-02-02 at 10:56:50ID: 10254791

did you copy them over as administrator??

by: jamesPeckPosted on 2004-02-02 at 11:05:25ID: 10254880

"did you copy them over as administrator?? "

yes

by: garfieldcooperPosted on 2004-02-02 at 11:10:47ID: 10254937

Yes

BUT , If i want to Copy USER A  to my Adminitrator folder It won't work because im logged on as that user and therefore files are in use.  So i have to create a new admin temorarily and then copy then folder.

No software is needed, only a little bit of tweaking.

USER M <the master user, yourself, who will do this tweaking business>

USER A<Victim> and USER B<Parasite>

** Be sure u have turned on the feature to see hidden files and folders

Now First get into USER M. <Be Sure both other profile are OFF meaning u have chosen USER M from the start up>

C Drive > Documents and Settings > Folder A > Open the folder > CTRL+A (Select All)
COPY and Place in some new folder

Create another USER B.

Restart and get back to USER M

Delete everything in

C Drive > Documents and Settings > Folder B

and Paste the folder derivatives from A (New folder)

Restart

Bingo.

Only - Outlook passwords will have to be reentered !!!

ALL THE BEST

did you restart the machine before you copied?  B/C if a user profile has been accessed since the last restart it will not copy all of that profile.

by: mikeleebrlaPosted on 2004-02-03 at 08:39:59ID: 10262616

also an important step was missed earlier i think,,, you have to make sure in the copy screen to give the user access to the newly copied profile... if not the user will not be able to access it and thus will not be able to log on
