Question

Graphical Report of File / Directory structure

Asked by: AndyO

Q.

I have hundreds of directories that I would like to re-organise.  The problem is that I would like to get a graphical report on the directory structure in an easily readable format (for users / md's etc)

I'd like to know if anyone knows of a good bit of s/w or f/w software that may assist in the generaltion of this report.

cheers

        Does the command:

tree d:\complexfolder\ > complexfolder.txt

fulfills your needs? It's included in any DOS/Win version.. if you're talking about one of these.

Hi AndyO!

The command from by b100dian is cool for the graphical part of the task. If you later want to work on the directories you better use dir /s /b /ad > complexfolder2.txt and import it into your favorite spreadsheet / database application.

One more thing...

The output now looks like this

Notepad.exe
³   ÃÄÄÄmcp logo
³   ÃÄÄÄNero
³   ÃÄÄÄntreskit
³   ³   ÃÄÄÄEMWAC
³   ³   ÃÄÄÄinstmon
³   ³   ÃÄÄÄKix95

how can I see the lines ???

cheers again

Either one of those:
  - you switch to a font that displays the lines correcly (ASCII / DOS encoded) like "Terminal"
  - you run "tree /A" instead of "tree" so that it'll use + - and | to render the lines
Also note that the "/F" switch allows you to display the contents of the folders too (i.e. files too).

Thank you for accepting my answer, but I would like to know if there is a particular reason for a B grade.
Remember, the site states that you should further ask for explanations when not satisfied before giving a lower grade.

cheers for your help again.  That answer was def. worth an A. :)

The reason for the B was simply because I really wanted something that could import a directory listing and allow me to manipulate it, report on it and possible alter it.

Its a lot to ask, and perhaps my question was not clear enough, but your answer enabled me to create a report.

A such (graphical and powerful) tool to arrange folders (and only click "Apply" in the final) would be nice and may be needed in some single circumstances, but since there is no evidence of a such product (afaik) it seems that the request is low:( The tree command may remain the only viable option...
