DVD audio not playing correctly-hear a clicking sound, also getting digital copyright error in Windows Media Player

I am having a multi-step problem, but here is some background.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP1.

My DVD recorder is a Pioneer DVR-105.

I am running version 8.00.00.4487.

Last evening, I tried to upgrade my version of WMP to version 9. This resulted in the following problems:

1. DVDs no longer play properly. The video is fine but the audio has clicking and popping. I've replicated this on numerous DVDs and within two different programs. I tested the audio with a regular audio CD and it sounded just fine. System sounds also come through just fine. It is only on DVDs that I am experiencing this problem.

2. When I try to play a certain DVD within WMP, it tells me that "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection." It plays other DVDs (albeit with clicks and pops) without throwing up this silly message. this particular DVD is brand spanking new and should not be having a problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried returning to a former restore point that I set before trying this WMP upgrade but the problem still exists. The system troubleshooter is no help.
