You might also try it on a seperate controller - you should have two internal IDE controllers.
Also - what make/model system do you have?
It may be that a BIOS update could fix this...

Double-check your jumpers.  Are they Master/Slave or Cable Select?

Also - if you've never touched this drive before (with format, etc), try setting it up as the only installed drive and insert your XP cd to have Setup create the partition for you.

by: canuto186Posted on 2004-02-24 at 17:59:23ID: 10446956

the jumpers are  set to slave and . like I said , the drive is recognize at startup by bios

Alternatively to what I've suggested above, you can try flip-flopping the drives...
Keep the jumpers the same, but place drive #1 on drive #2's connector and vice-versa...

So when you ran diskmgmt.msc there was only one hard drive show both on the bottom and top screens?

I would try running some other OS, like Knoppix: http://www.knoppix.org/
You can find a list of download sites at http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
This OS boots from a CD, and is basically linux on a CD. Just put it in, and let it boot. Then you should see a couple of Hard Drive icons on the Desktop. Let me know what these icons say.

Instructions on downloading Knoppix and burning the ISO onto a CD can be found at http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/FaqDownloading

This other OS will at least help us see if it's Windows' fault that no 2nd Hard Drive is seen or if it's your mobo that is blind.

You said you only saw a drive "C" in disk management.

If you look in the pane below....you may have to scroll do you by any chance see a "Disk 0" and "Disk 1"?

FDISK.exe

You will create a new logical partition using your new hard drive.

The thing is that you must boot in DOS to get that running smoothly. You might wanna get a boot disk from some windows ME machine or something. I am not familiar with XP (personnally, I think it's part of an ongoing attempt to imitate Mac OS... ) but my guess is that you cannot get a DOS boot from XP.

I've had the same problem millions of times before: FDISK (data in the drive will be lost, so make sure that it's the new drive... :-)

Hello

I think your HDD have an electrical problems. Do you have test this HDD on other system? I usualy add HDD by simply plug the data cable and the power cord and my XP pro after an Scan for new devices show the new HDD. I do not recomend you to do this, but if you are carefoul it is OK. So because of this comportament I think your disk have an problem on the electrical intertface. Another problem can ocur on permision but you will see the this disk on Disk management. Why you do not use CS setting on the IDE interface? this can help because some disk use an settings for Master single an other for Master with Slave present.

If it is windows xp it will normally detect the hard drive but if not then it probably has problems.
if it is win 9x/2000, boot to DOS and format the hard drive. when it is formatted it should show; if it doesnt format then it has problems.

Does the drive show up in Device manager? (Right Click My Computer - Manage - Device Manager) ... can't remember the exact location, but it should be listed there somewhere.

If you're running XP you shouldn't need to partition it outside the OS... it should just show up in Disk Management as said by others in this thread.

by: canuto186Posted on 2004-02-26 at 14:05:00ID: 10464413

by: canuto186Posted on 2004-02-26 at 14:14:01ID: 10464511

the problem is , that disk 1 , only appears on the lower part of disk management , so when you right click on it format  is  not one of the options , how to I proceed wit the formatting this drive ,

by: sirbountyPosted on 2004-02-26 at 14:18:33ID: 10464566

Okay, at the bottom, you should see Disk0 on the left and C: on the right side.
What options do you have when you click Disk1 on the left and/or the blank space on the right?

by: sirbountyPosted on 2004-02-26 at 14:39:15ID: 10464781

Must not be getting enough sleep at night... :)
