The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Sasser / Spyware related BIG boot problems

Asked by mcampbellpro in Operating Systems Miscellaneous

I'll have to start with a story of everything leading up to my problem..because maybe that will give _someone_ a clue as to what is going on....

Yesterday, I lost my DSL connection but urgently needed to get work done online, so i installed a modem I had around. The moment I dialed-up and connected, Norton Antivirus informed me that the Sasser B virus was detected, but could not be repaired. I did not, however, receive any shutdown messages as the sasser normally creates.

I also noticed that from that moment on, I could no longer get to Internet Options through either the control panel or the tools menu in IE. I get the message "cannot access due to restrictions placed on this computer"

I ignored that for the moment, and downloaded the hotfix from Microsoft for Sasser. Then I ran the M.soft Sasser removal tool. This tool told me that my computer was not infected.

I rebooted. On windows load, I received a message that lsass.exe failed..but no shutdown count.

After a bit, my computer froze completly. I rebooted. The computer started hanging randomly..sometimes it would hang at the Windows screen..sometimes before it even got done with the RAM test. Sometimes it hangs before it even starts the RAM test. Sometimes windows starts, everything works fine..and then freezes. Sometimes it doesnt even freeze, but the monitor goes into standby. I cant run any virus or spyware removers, because the machine freezes too often.

I removed the modem I had just installed. No change.

Because it sometimes hangs at the RAM test, I removed and replaced the RAM sticks..no change. Ive tried disabling and removing the network card...

Nothing i do seems to make a difference. At this point, I get into windows succesfully about 1 in 30 tries. And when I do get into windows, the most it will run without freezing or blanking the screen is 10 minutes.

Any ideas?
