Question

compaq presario recovery console

Asked by: cree_comp

Hey Guys/Gals

I'm working on a compaq presario S4000NX which has the hidden partition (recovery console). I had to do a repair from the console because the system would keep rebooting. Now that everything is fine, about 2 out of every 3 boots, the system will go to the recovery console. I upgraded the bios, and I reset to the bios defaults...I don't see anything strang in msconfig either. Anybody seen this before? I'm not sure what I can do. I don't want to do a system recovery and lose all of the customer's data. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanx

you might want to check the boot.ini file.

here's a tutorial on how to do so:

Why did you use the "REcovery Console"?

Don't know about that compaq recovery console...

Anyway, what I would do assuming XP/2K

boot with the Windows XP/2K setup disk.
Enter the recovery console.
run:
chkdsk c: /p
fixmbr
make the boot partition active and try and boot the system

Nothing much to offer here (yet) - I'm more interested in the outcome of this one...peculiar to say the least.
Does it give an error when doing so?
Have you tried
FIXBOOT
from the RC?

If the system keeps rebooting, it thinks the RAM is bad, the hard disk is going bad, or the registry is bad.  Try the easiest first -- remove all RAM when the system is off, reseat it with a good snap.  Then if that doesn't work, check Windows setup, make sure there is a good swap file on C: -- My computer, properties, advanced, performance settings, advanced, change, and let windows manage the swap file on C (PS what a STUPID place to bury such a crucial feature!!! typical MS!)

Lastly if the windows config is messed up for good, you are better to do a clean install and start over again, Compaq or not.

I should have said, if not obvious, that you must be sure the hardware is OK first before reinstalling the software, and if you have to do the latter, you can prep the system to migrate settings over, but you also risk re-importing the ?corrupt? registry from the old install.  Have you tried a plain "repair install"?  Boot from the XP Cd, go through as if you are going to do a new install, but when it finds the OLD installation, choose "R" to repair.  This often works well.  But DO NOT hit enter at this stage !!!!!!

when the computer boots to recovery console , try to exit out of that window
if the computer booted back to microsoft xp then go to system properties
clcik on advanced , clcik on the settings under startup and recovery
look at the default operating system menu and change the app settings
if the computer wont exit out of the recovery console screen then either you can go for bootcfg /rebuild
hopefully that will resolve the issue ....

I have an issue on a Compaq S4020 running XP. Some delightful party ran an XP repair with the XP CD and brought it to me, now we cannot access the Compaq Restore partition to restore it's original load. All the required files are there in the partition. I figure that BOOTCFG /rebuild and setting up the correct lines should do it. BUT what the heck are they. I have tried editing the boot.ini in the start up options, anybody know what the 'command' line is to get the partition going? Tried making the boot flop from Compaq site, won't go the file is no good. Booting to safe doesn't give the recovery option any longer, F10 on boot no response from it at all (keyboard is fine). The CFG rebuilds I can add what ever but the partition won't boot. The listing on the CFG is D:\MiniNT, D:\I386, C:\Windows. Running the setup from the I386 on the partiton works but the same result as installing XP standalone, the Compaq originals not there. I think I need a certain file in the CFG to kick this thing off.
