The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. XP Pro giving wrong used space data

I hope someone can help. To solve a problem I had with Win 98SE recognising an Apacer 1gB USB 2.0 drive stick (which was another EE question I submitted, I decided to upgrade to XP Pro because the of the good advice I received from EE comments. (That question is still open until EE show me how to award 500 points to two of my advisors). I decided to use the XP Pro upgrade but I left the file system as FAT32 so I wouldn't have to format drives and reload software for the NTFS file system. The Apacer USB drive worked but the XP installation has left me with some problems the main one being that I am getting the wrong data for used space on my C drive.
I have an 8 gB C drive (7.83 gB capacity according to Windows) and a 40 gB D drive. I loaded most program files onto the D drive. The C drive was pretty full after the XP Pro upgrade so I tried to unistall unecessary programs in the control panel "Add/Remove programs". Some removed but some said "could not open install log file". These were small programs. Anyway, my hard disk was still mostly "full"!!! So I started to move folders from the C to D drive and deleted many large files. However, the C drive properties indicate that 6.7gB is used. I checked the properties of the Windows folder on the C drive and it was 1.9 gB. The rest of the files and folders amounted to 2.8 gB (of which the program folder was 0.9 gB). That means my C drive should be about 4.7 gB full. There are 2 gB missing. Could it be virtual memory space? I didn't think VM registered as used space. The defrag program says that I need 15% free space to defrag but I only have 14%. But I don't think defrag can solve the problem of the "missing" 2 gBs. Could the space be taken up by software/program "ghosts". If so, is there freeware that can help me clean it up??? I don't want to remove all software and format the C drive as a solution unless nothing can be done.
