My question was clear how to append to a compressed archive and NOT a tar archive.Man tar does not give any switch TO APPEND to a COMPRESSED (gzip) archive.

So what it comes down to, is the GNU tar command does not have any feature to allow you to append to a compressed file. I looked into it a little more and also found that tar -r needs to have a file and will not read from standard input. So what you may want to do if you have to do this frequently is write a script that basically does the commands below:
gunzip <file>.tar.gz --> changes the file to <file>.tar
tar -rf <file>.tar <appendfile>
gzip <file>.tar --> changeds the file to <file>.tar.gz
