Question

When I click "All Programs" in XP it takes 20-30 seconds for the window to fill

Asked by: rspalding

When I click the All Programs button in XP Pro SP2 .....the window comes up immeadeatly but is blank for 20 or so seconds.  If I close and reopen it fills normally but if I don't immeadeatly reopen it again remains blank for the 20 or so seconds. The computer is not hung or locked when this happens, nor do I notice anyother annoying problem. In fact I like XP fine but this problem just started for no reason. No additional software was recently loaded, nor did I delete anything other than known text/data files that I am sure were not associated with the OS.  This is not a panic problem but does worry me that something is wrong......
Thanks for any help,
Rick Spalding

you can :
-run sfc /scannow from the run box
-check if there are big folders or files (a zip folder from some MB can cause that)
-check if you have enough disk space free
-run a disk check on the drive (scan for errors)
-check for virus and other malware :

It sounds like it is trying to access an either large or unaccessible file that is in your start menu. Your Start Menu is compiled from two folders, the First is C:\Documents and Settigns\All Users\Start Menu\Programs; All users on the computer see these items, if you have another user on the computer, see if they have the same problem, if they do it is most probably is the first folder, otherwise the problem is in your second folder, that being the one which is personalised to you, that is stored in C:\Documents and Settingfs\YOUR USER NAME\Start Menu\Programs.

Once you figure out where the problem may lie, open those folders up in windows explorer and look for an out of place file amongst the folders, either a large file, or one thay may be a network/LAN file or an internet linked file.

Everytime you open start menu it is trying to access this out of reach file, it may even be a program which is still in the start menu but you deleted\removed\uninstalled long ago.

Loo karound for these symptoms, but more info would be handy, i.e. are you on a Windows Network wit ha domain, and are you using roaming profiles?

you can also disable items from start menu if you right click on it, select properties, select start menu tab, settings

This can happen if you have many items inside "All Programs". I suggest you create a view Subfolders into which you can then move some of the other folders into. I for instance have "Office Programs", "Utilities", "Grafics", "Multimedia", "DVD-CD Authoring" folders and nothing else. Apart from "All Programs" opening quicker that way, it is also more "cleaned-up".

:::::::defragment local disk c:  start>all programs> accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter.
delete temporary files: C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\local settings\temp : empty this folder and also C:\documents and settings\(username)\local settings\temporary internet files.
these files tend to slow up your computer. defragmenting should also speed it up a bit.

if you have norton 2004: you could defragment your registry also. i dont recommend doing this w/o a tool though, it could be dangerous.

good luck. im open for any other q's you might have

Try to recall if the problem started after SP2. SP2 has the tendency of making working problems stop functioning.
You can go through accesories and using the restore function choose a date when the C was functioning.

I thought everything in All Programs were shortcuts????  Anyway...checked all folders in Programs .....nothing bigger than a shortcut (1-3 K)...Defraged and downloaded suggested spyware checkers. Ran em all and by the way thanks for the lead to "HijackThis"....great little program....here is the log....I don't see anything ....maybe someone else will. In any case so far no luck ....have tried what has been suggested.....sorta tempted to take gonzal13(joe)'s suggestion of restoring but that seems like a possible easy fix but I will still not know what is causing the problem. Not much point in researching this stuff if ya don't learn anything......any other suggestions???? I'm not ready to give up yet!!!!

Sometimes it is better to fix the problen, even though the reason for it may not be known. You have to weight what is more important. For me the fix out weights finding out the exact reason for the calamity. I doubt that you have been 'hyjacked'

did you know that you had mywebsearch bar on your computer? did you knwo you had the google toolbar? did you know you had the ebay toolbar. some people love the google toolbar, but im wary of it. i dont know if it has any spyware but im wary of all "toolbars" most of them come bundled with things you dont want. my web search comes with numerous programs, but you absolutely dont want it on your computer. delete this entries from this log and this is just a half-expert speaking.

submit this log to www.castlecops.biz and they will be able to tell you what else you want to fix. this is all i see thats particularly bad.

also if you didnt know about that you had the ebay toolbar, you probably did, but jsut go through the log and fx everything that says ebay toolbar.

MyWebSearch = big NONO

Also shortcuts have to be loaded to memory or cache, if there are many of them it'll make your system slow (even if it is a fast PC with plenty of RAM), that's why I advised you to put them into subfolders, that way the system only needs to load those you need at the time. Performance may improve if you have your indexing services turned (Inside services as well as for the drive itself).

OK I have sorted catagories in my program folders. I restored back about a month with no effect.......As far as the toolbars go......My wife insists on using smileys in her e-mails. I haven't found a good way to have them available for her any other way and as sfar as thing go I have not found anything detrimental bundled in the web search bar....some ads occasionally but little else. The Ebay Bar I use in selling and buying. I am a frequentuser in Eby so I would like to keep that bar unless I start seeing weird things happeniing (Other than this hang problem I am having). I have had the toolbars for many months without having the current problem so it must be something else??????. I would like to keep trying to find the problem.......thanks to everyone sofar but......what else do you think it could be???
