Question

Error 0x7e when entering Add/Remove Windows Components

When entering "Add/Remove Windows Components" from the "Add or Remove Programs" applet I immediately get a Windows XP Setup Error, "Setup library desk.cpl could not be loaded, or function DisplayOcSetupProc could not be found. Contact your system administrator. The specific error is 0x7e.

Sounds like the desk.cpl could not be found at all.  DisplayOcSetupProc is the entry procedure into the code base residing in the file.  Check you system32 directory for the desk.cpl file - if it's not there, then I'd suggest re-installing the latest service pack you've used - it should be a part of SP1 and/or SP2 I believe.

And have you yet run a SFC scan ??
Goto START>RUN and type, cmd  (hit enter)
now type, sfc /scannow  (hit enter)
SFC scan will start scanning ur system
u will need ur Win2k CD in order to fix the corrupted windows system files, if found by scan.

Hi gbm33 :-)

Simply replace the following file in ur computer from the Windows XP CD.

1. Insert the XP CD.
2. goto I386 directory.
3. Create a folder on ur computer Desktop or drive name it "Desk"
3. copy the desk.cp_ and expand.exe to \Desk folder.
4. goto command prompt.
5. goto the desk directory using CD command.
6. and then issue the following command :-
expand.exe desk.cp_ \WINNT\SYSTEM32\DESK.CPL

7. now try !!!

Ok
one more thing i would like to say. I think you are using this PC on a network and your administrator has lock down the desk.cpl and Add/Remove Programs by using Group Policy.

Is it the case ?

Please post for more info.

Barthax: I resinstalled XP and XP SP2 with no positive effect.

SheharyaarSaahil: I ran sfc /scannow with no positive effect.

SystmProg: Bingo! Thanks for the help. Your solution worked. However, I am not on a network.  Thanks again.
