Whats the best way to format deleting everything in a hardrive?

I think i got a VIrus in my master boot record i need to format the drive but i heard that formating doesnt erase the MBR is this true? i was running win 2000 pro and it was fine but now that i reinstalled after formating the drive due to a virus that i couldnt repair or remove,  and now its running real shitty  please help what can i do to restore performance.Start Free Trial
