No Linux has no Verdana nor Tahoma fonts.
Some Linux distributions (e.g.SuSE) alow you ( after accepting MS Licence agreement) to connect to MicrosoftWEB sources and download Microsoft proprietary fond of True Type Fonts (TTF) which will then be included in font sources directory so your fs ( Linux font server) can use them.
Anyway you can cpy TTF files in your fonts directory but then you have to manualy edit and configure font server for X system which can lead in troublesome opeartion if you're not familiar with editconfig Linux.
more info and workaround you'll find here :

"... try to make sure any web content I code works in multiple browsers "
Whatever font type you chose in your HTML code the way fonts are displayed on screen depends on browser configuration. Verdana and Tahoma fonts would be most likely replaced by Beatstream Vera fonts on Linux boxes. Mozilla browsers ( Netscape and Firefox) will default to adobe-courier-iso8859-1 or adobe-helvetica-iso8859-1 and beatstream-courier font that are closest mach to Verdana/Tahoma TTF fonts.
good luck
