Browse All TopicsI do a lot of work on customers PC and I would like to know if there are any tools for viewing the registry and scanning for adware, spyware, and/or malware as an external drive. For example I take the customers hard drives out of their PC's and then connect them to my machine via a USB 2.0 port and it shows up as another drive. Now I want to veiw/edit the registry on that hard drive since it is the boot drive. Next I want to scan it for malware, adware, and/or spyware. Basically I want to preform maintenance on their hard drive without having to boot it up on their PC since it is so infected.
Thanks.

I use a bartPE bootable cd and usb network adapter to do many tasks on hard disks without removing them from the machine. Just boot their computer off the cd and use a gui . You can get the free tools to build your own bootable cd here http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilde
Handy tool when dealing with lots of different pc's and great for recovery work.
Resplendent Registrar can take care of your registry editing needs although it's not freeware it has a 21-day trial but it looks like awesome software, I was looking for something like it recently.

Combined with a bartPE boot cd as Peregian suggested with Ad-aware and Anti-virus modules this would prove to be a handy toolkit. You could also rig Resplendent in a way that you would always have a 21-day trial as well ;)
I think I'll stick with bartpe and the registry editor plugin http://www.bootcd.us/BartP
