Question

How can i make process use more than 50% of cpu?

Asked by: sapbucket

Hello,

I am running a big simulation and any performance increase saves me lots of time. Basically, I have been monitoring the CPU usage history in the Windows Task Manager and noticed that the process running the simulation never gets more than 50% of the cpu dedicated to it. Is there a way I can, say, get 80-90% of the cpu dedicated to the process?

I played with setting the priority to above normal and beyond but it doesn't seem to make the cpu% increase at all. In fact, it just makes my system unstable.

Im using: winXP Professsional (fully updated)
the process is a console application (start->run->cmd.exe)

3GHz CPU with 1 GB ram

Thanks!

Your problem is related to Hyperthreading AND probably the app your using.

Hyperthreading makes Windows think it sees TWO CPUs when there's physically only one.  The two CPUs are actually the FLoating point unit (that handles the math with decimals) and Integer unit (which handles numbers without decimals).  If your program is heavily into floating point calculations, then you use 100% of the floating point CPU and 0% of the integer CPU.  COMBINED, this amounts to 50% of the CPU.

In addition, your program may not be multithreaded, which means it cannot take advantage of multiple processors.  So even though the CPU can do simultaneous floating point and integer calculations, your program can only handle one at a time.

If you really want to speed this up, drop windows.  Get a Linux version of the app that is SMP aware and cluster them.  You can DRAMATICALLY improve the performance because you'll have multiple computers working on the same problem in different areas.

That makes perfect sense. That also is why there are two windows displayed in the task manager: one looks maxed out, the other shows random blips near the base line.

OK, I have a computer that is perfect for setting linux up on. It is currently configured with XP Pro. Can you recommend an FAQ to "walk" me through the migration process to Linux from a WinXP?

What does SMP stand for?

Thanks leew!

If you want, you can disable Hyperthreading by going into the BIOS.  I "think" that would make it so that you reach above 50%

SMP = symmetric Multi Processing (referring to using more than 1 CPU).

Using Linux on one system isn't going to help much if at all - the idea is to get MULTIPLE PCs, all running linux, to work on the problem simultaneously.  I attended a user group presentation on Linux clustering and while I didn't think the presenter did a very good job, setting up a cluster did look fairly easy.

In addition, if YOU aren't able rewrite the program - or find a linux version of the program - this isn't going to help as you won't be able to run the program

IF you can do all the above, here's some docs on how to cluster Linux:

Yes, disabling it would allow you to reach 100%, but it also would slow the computer down and the process down because the process would now have share all it's time with everything else windows is doing.  Basically, it would be cosmetically beneficial in what the system told you, but would actually be detrimental to performance, especially since XP is the OS (2000 was not hyperthreading aware and COULD actually perform worse with HT enabled, but XP IS HT aware and WILL perform better with it enabled.
