Audio disabled on WIN XP SP2

I formatted my PC recently and installed WIN XP SP2 on it. I also installed all the drivers and everything looked to be working perfectly well. However, I don't seem to be able to get my audio device to work. I have a built-in audio device that my device manager seems to be able to detect and it says that it's working normally. My audio settings (in control panel) are greyed out and I can't control audio in any way.

Any solutions out there??

First reboot your system and press delete to enter your system bios, you say that your motherboard has built-in audio so in the bios you will want to ensure that your on board
sound is enabled. Most motherboards have them enabled by default but others do not. Check this and hopefully it will fix your problem

What is the name of your motherboard and the onboard audio?

Make sure nothing is muted inside of Windows and on the speakers.

Its almost certainly a drivers issue. Is this a standard PC setup, or is this a custom build? If its a standard setup, the manufacturer will have audio drivers on their web site. Otherwise, look up the motherboard manufacturer's web site and download the audio drivers. You may also need the chipset drivers.

I am using an Intel 865 PERL motherboard. I downloaded and installed the latest audio drivers from intel's website. The strange thing is that the installation seems to terminate successfully but I don't see the blue Sound Max icon that I used to have prior to formatting my machine..

Try uninstalling the sound card in the device manager, rebooting, then letting XP re-discover it.  This might install a driver XP is happy with.

OK, I found the solution... You guys won't believe it!! I had Ad-Aware SE Professional running while trying to install the audio drivers.

I disabled Ad-Aware, reinstalled the driver and voila, everything was perfect..
