Sorry, if you disconnct the data drive and just install the NEW drive does it boot?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI installed a new HDD in my computer and installed WinXP Pro - SP1a on it, planning to use my backup copy to restore everything to its more-or-less prevous state. However, Windows re-lettered drives/partitions, turning a data drive from "E:" into "C:" and the new drive into "E:".
Windows would let me change neither drive letter (using Admin Tools>Disk Management) because both are boot drives, so I went to PM. It warned me there could be problems, but I trusted it dould handle it.
When I boot, I get a error screen that says: "PartitionMagic (xmnt2002.exe) PartitionMagic is unable to read the batch file. Verify that the system32 directory is not compressed or corrupt. Press any key to continue" Pressing a key takes me to a two-tone blue Windows screen that looks like the screen seen while Win is loading settings, but it has only the logo and everything freezes up. Only a power-off or press of the reset button does anything.
I found BartPE and using that I can get to a Win Explorer-like page and regedit. Symantec Knowledge Base gives a solution involving a regedit and removing the references to xmnt2002.exe, but it's not anywhere in the registry (or on any drive, best I can tell). Symantec support somewhere in India was also unable to come up with anything.
How can I get Win to boot again and get the drive letters changed?
thanx & sorry for being so long-winded

I am unsure about protocol here and correct use of the boards. I assume this is the right way to post an answer, but I see an "Accept" button and I don't know what that's for.
Anyhoo, I actually have four drives in my computer. Two are typical IDE/ATA drives, both jumpered to "Cable Select." I know one of those has a corrupt partition on it, but both are essentially data drives. The corrupted partitiion used to hold my programs.
The other two are SATA drives and I think they are also "cable select." They are set the way they came out of the box. One is supposed to be my Windows disk and is lableled "Win" and is the first of the two. The other is mostly digital pictures and is called "Pix" Pix does have a Windows directory on it. but it has only a "system32" folder. That fiull directory path is "\Windows\system32\WBEH\Lo
Symantec has a solution to this problem, but it involves registry chnages and I can't get anything I do iin the registry using BartPE to stick. I am not even sure I am actually accessing the Windows registry, since I can run regedit with the Win drive disconnected. That makes me think I'm editing air.

Hi sfcarlw
Why this happens:
PQMagic requires xmnt2002.exe in order to partition NTFS drives, it creates a batch script, creates entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar
If xmnt..exe is not there, it will keep looping
The simples way to do FIX all this :-
1 remove your *old* working HDD
2 keep your new drive - make sure it IDE1 as master
3 reinstall XP SP1a
4 install PQ Magic (make sure xmnt2002.exe is found in \windows\system32)
5 partition how you like it
6 reboot - let xmnt2002 do its work
7 change drive letter if desired
8 shutdown pc
9 Add your *old* HDD to IDE2 as slave
10 start up XP - it will be added as a new drive letter
11 copy settings, etc
12 remove *old* drive or do whatever you like
13 voila !
Hope this helps

If you have access to another XP machine you can use the "Load Hive" feature of regedit to load the registry of the "problem drive".
For example: if I wanted to load HLKM\Software from the "problem drive", I attach it as a slave drive to a working XP box. Then click on HKLM, go to File>Load Hive and then drill to D:\windows\system32\config
The only way I know of editting the registry would be to use ERD Commander from Winternals or AVAST!'s boot CD. I don't think you can natively edit the registry of a remote machine from Windows PE.
To Morci, I don't have SP1a to install on its own. For aeinss, I do not have a working machine I can hook up to the bad one. My laptop is working, but I can't connect them since the "broken" unit can't run to network it.
I disconnected all but the "Win" drive and it won't boot, some error that I (stupidly) didn't record. Booted with Windows CD and am running CHKDSK and will follow that with FIXMBR to see what happens then.
I like Morci's idea of working with only one drive at a time and adding them back one at a time.
thanx

You probably cannot find it because it is a binary value and not a string value. Take a look at this article here:

Drive letters are not hard coded. Sounds like your "data drive" is bootable and perhaps you made it primary master instead of secondary master/slave on the motherboard?
If you disconnect the data drive and just install the data drive does it boot? What is the IDE configuration of each drive? What port is each IDE drive on and what are the jumpers set to (cable select, master, slave, etc)?
