The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

PQ PartitionMagic 8.0 boot and xm2002.exe error

Asked by sfcarlw in Operating Systems Miscellaneous

Tags: batch, read, unable

I installed a new HDD in my computer and installed WinXP Pro - SP1a on it, planning to use my backup copy to restore everything to its more-or-less prevous state. However, Windows re-lettered drives/partitions, turning a data drive from "E:" into "C:" and the new drive into "E:".

Windows would let me change neither drive letter (using Admin Tools>Disk Management) because both are boot drives, so I went to PM. It warned me there could be problems, but I trusted it dould handle it.

When I boot, I get a error screen that says: "PartitionMagic (xmnt2002.exe) PartitionMagic is unable to read the batch file. Verify that the system32 directory is not compressed or corrupt. Press any key to continue" Pressing a key takes me to a two-tone blue Windows screen that looks like the screen seen while Win is loading settings, but it has only the logo and everything freezes up. Only a power-off or press of the reset button does anything.

I found BartPE and using that I can get to a Win Explorer-like page and regedit. Symantec Knowledge Base gives a solution involving a regedit and removing the references to xmnt2002.exe, but it's not anywhere in the registry (or on any drive, best I can tell). Symantec support somewhere in India was also unable to come up with anything.

How can I get Win to boot again and get the drive letters changed?

thanx & sorry for being so long-winded

c
