Question

Second domain controller not authenticating users

Asked by: dbanik

We just upgraded our 2000 servers to 2003 as well as added a second 2003 domain controller. Our first domain controller was down this morning and the second domain controller did not take over and authenticate users. I'm thinking that is  the problem, but the way I know the first is down is that I try to bring up my Outlook email and it can not authenticate and connect. The Exchange server is just a member server with the Active Directory link. Why doesn't the other domain controller authenticate me and allow me to login and get my email? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
Is it set as a global catalog server? Check that first

Is it also a dns server?

From my experiences, whenever there are authentication issues, its usually a Time Synchronization issue, make sure the second domain controller's time is in perfect sync with the other domain controller, as well as with all the workstations.

We made the new 2003 domain controller the Global Catalog server because its newer and faster.
It is not a DNS server yet. And of course, if the DNS server is down, the others wouldn't know how to get to the new one. I need to get DNS up and have the 2 synchronization the DNS database. Will work on that today.

Hi
When you first setup dns on it - make sure it's ad integrated and able accept dynamic updates and point it at your first server for dns in tcp/ip then at itself for secondary. This should prevent them "islanding". When you issue dhcp leases to your clients (if you do)- give them dns servers in tcp/ip as the ip addresses of both servers. Make sure in dns - both servers are listed as nameservers (not the same as forwarders- though you probably know this anyway). Then test it. Don't forget if server one is issuing dhcp leases then server two will need to be setup to provide that redundancy also,

Thanks very much! I'm a novice at the DNS thing!  I appreciate your help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Can you give me a little help on setting DHCP for redundancy? I can't have the same scope on two servers can I?

by: Debsyl99Posted on 2005-09-02 at 11:26:13ID: 14812484

Nope you can't - how many leases do you need on this subnet?

by: Debsyl99Posted on 2005-09-02 at 11:44:35ID: 14812603

Well - you can't have scopes that overlap -
You can configure both servers with  scopes that lease addresses in the ranges as below: - Make sure you exclude ip addresses for your servers/routers or anything else that needs to have a static ip.

Server 1 scope 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.125
Server 2 scope 10.0.0.126 to 10.0.0.250

This configures your dhcp for 50/50 redundancy ie 50 per cent of your leases are from one dhcp server the other 50% from the other. Just make sure you set the same server options for both in terms of dns server/wins if you use it, gateway address etc,

hope that helps
