Question

sfc /scannow

Asked by: ppdevries

Hi,

I need to double check on the function of sfc /scannow. The situation is as follows. On a 2000 server with sql one of the admin users have updated the mdac on it form 2.5 to 2.8. After he have done so they realised that one of their apps aren't functioning properly anymore. They then decided to rollback to mdac 2.5 and while doing so was asked if they want to clear the dllcache, which they decded yes on and thus clearing the cache.

My question is if I run sfc /scannow and it rebuilds the cache, will it affect all the installed patches and service packs installed on the server?  Reading MS Q222471 it says that it will:

"repopulates the DLLCache folder with the most recent versions of protected files. This requires access to the Windows installation source files and also the installed Service Pack files."

IOW it will not remove any service packs or updates installed on this server?

Thanks,

As far as I know: it does not remove the updates/service packs.

However, if you do not have access to the update/service pack files -
it will repopulate the dllcache folder from the original installation media.

This means that you should re-apply all the service packs and updates -
the versions of the files in the dllcache folder will not be the same (older)
as the versions installed (from SP's/updates).

Good luck!

OK, I do however have a backup of the dllcache folder. What If I restore this before I run sfc /scannow or instead of running it at all?

Don't really want to run this and then have to reapply all the service packs.

Cheers,

Pieter

If your cd is SP4 then you won't have to reaply any SP's...just the subsequent updates.  If your install cd is not sp4, it'd be worthwhile to create a slipstreamed one.  Any files pulled form the original install cd would be at whatever SP level the cd is.

If you restore your dllcache folder and are not prompted for a cd when running sfc /scannow, then your files should be at the patch level of the files used in the dllcache folder.

Hi again,

Thanks for the comments posted already, it is very much appreciated.

After look at this problem for 2 days now, I am starting to think if it is worth bothering about this at all. This windows file protection feature is to protect against important system files getting lost or damaged or replaced by wrong ones ect. What I am thinking is that I have a working system, that is crucial to our org and running sfc to get the dllcache back up to date might make it stop working.

You know the story "If it ain't broken don't fix it"

This is a real pain to be honest and I think the best option might be to turn of the windows file protection feature on this server.

Has someone done this or used this feature before?

Regards,

I'd have to agree with the "ain't broke, don't fix".  I've used sfc many times, and it has helped fix broken systems sometimes, but I don't run it as part of any scheduled maint.  I had a situation at a client a while back where they basically had me just "do whatever is supposed to be done with these things".  Their server was seemingly running fine and had over 450 days of uptime....and was still running SP2!  I *really* didn't want to reboot that one after applying SP4...and put it off as long as possible!
