Question

Export Active Directory Structure

Asked by: craylord

I'd like to hear about ways to export AD to a flat file. It should include all the OU's, objects, etc. It doesn't have to be extremely detailed, just a listing of the structure.

Start
C:\Desired_Folder>dir >> DirList.txt

Sorry I hit the enter key before I was done....
If all you want is a list of a directory's contents try this:

(NT/2K/XP)  Start : Run : CMD
(Win9X)  Start : Run : command

at command prompt type:
   C:\Desired_Folder>dir >> DirList.txt

This command will tell the PC to dump a directory list into a text file named DirList.txt
It will look like this:
-------------------------------------------
Volume in drive C is DRV2_VOL1
 Volume Serial Number is xxxx-xxxx

 Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

04/01/2004  06:50 PM    <DIR>          .

This needs to be done with the AD schema. Not just a plain directory listing. Thanks though. Or if there is a tool that will accomplish this.

by: don_engtechPosted on 2005-09-23 at 09:25:04ID: 14945702

Also if you want the list to look a certain way or show certain items try adding some switches to the "dir" command.  at prompt type "dir /?" and it will show you your options.

Try:
<prompt>\dir /O:N >> DirList.txt

this would make the same file as my post above but list dir/files alphabeticly!!!

Hope that helps,
Don

What's an Active Directory Schema?

by: don_engtechPosted on 2005-09-23 at 09:32:05ID: 14945786

OK I looked it up....

Sorry I wasted your time...

This is more of a programming question don't you think?

by: craylordPosted on 2005-09-23 at 09:37:12ID: 14945848

Not really programming, but more like a server administrator. Users, groups, etc are created in a structure and can be exported at a single level, but not the sublevels.

There's a utility MS provides to do this... I have to look it up.

I'm not sure if this was the one I am thinking of, but check this out:

I recommend csvde as it will create a .csv file which you could open in Excel, and I've used it more.
....guess I'm just partial.
Hope that Helps

I just had to say that I second csvde.  Spamster FTW

I'm leaning more towards the csvde as well, testing it out.

What about ADSIEDIT? Not sure if export functionality is there, but its free give it a shot....

-Personally, unless I'm misunderstanding this I really dont see the point... There are millions of object definitions and parameters in the schema... I dont see how you are going to make practical use of such a vast about of data and making sence of what the schema defs are is not that simple either... I suggest to you that whatever you think you can use this data for may be a blind alley...

by: craylordPosted on 2005-09-23 at 13:18:34ID: 14947995

I just want the list as an example for creating a new domain structure.

such as a flat csv file.  If I were to right click berlin and choose export it would only list the OU Computers.
-Europe
 -Germany
   -Berlin
    -computers
-Americas (OU)
 -Wyoming (OU)
   -computers
   -groups
   -users
 -Alaska
   -computers
   -groups
   -users

by: HousenetPosted on 2005-09-23 at 16:47:55ID: 14949185

I see, you only want some details like OU members etc...
You definatly need to use LDIF utility http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/activedirectory/bulksteps.asp

by: mburdickPosted on 2005-09-23 at 18:35:56ID: 14949502

You could also look into using something like LAT (LDAP Admin Tool) or any other tool like that.

And, MS has something that I believe is called ADMT (Active Directory Migration Tools) or something like that. Since these tools are intended to move your domain info from one domain to another, you may be able to to use it to dump schema.

BTW: Schema and structure are two different things.

Structure consists of things like the tree layout, OU's, O's, etc. The Schema is the set of definitions that describe the type of objects that can live in the tree, what attributes are available for them and which are required. It also describes attribute names and the *type* of values they can contain.

It sounds like you're asking for the two different things, but referring to them both as 'schema'.
