The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Using Linux to view Windows hard drive that has problems

I have a Dell XPPro workstation with one hard drive.  The hard drive stopped booting with an error messagge referring to unmountable boot device.  Diagnostics did not show the drive to have failed.  Dell suggested we could move the drive to another computer and set up as second drive and try to access data.  We did this and the drive showed up but when we tried to explore it we received a message that the drive was not formatted.  At Dell's suggestion, we moved the drive back to the original computer and ran the drive diagnostics again and this time the drive failed.  However, when booting the drive now goes to the XP start up screen and then goes to an error message saying the hive is corrupted \SystemRoot\System32\Config\System.  We have considered using the Recovery Console but Dell says we will most likely lose the data and suggests that we send the drive to a data recovery company without doing anything else that might harm the chances of recovering the data.  We have received one proposal from a local shop to attempt to boot the computer using a Linux disk then read the drive and move the files to a flash drive for transfer as long as the file structure has not been corrupted.  My questions are 1)is the data still readable 2)will using the Linux option work 3)if the file structure is not readable by Linux will doing this further harm the chances of having the data recovered by a data recovery specialty company 4)does anyone have any other solutions that will allow us to recover the data. The amount of data we have to recover is relatively small (about 1 gig); however, it is critical.  Any help would be very much appreciated.
