Question

Windows XP Theme

Asked by: Jetheat

I have Win XP Pro.

I left the computer with an application running. (A specialist Application).

Anyway, when I returned, the screen was on Screensaver but it was frozen. No key or mouse would bring it out of this state.

So I restarted the PC. It booted up but to a Blank Screen. After doing this a couple of times, I managed to get the screen which asks if you want to start Windows in Safe Mode or Last know Good Configuration - which is what I chose.

Finally, I arrived in Win XP but my Blue Windows theme and the Olive Green Theme have gone. They are no longer in the list when I right click on the desktop and go to properties. At the moment, I'm using that default silver crappy theme.

Where could the good XP themes be and how do I get them back?

You need to restore your themes. Go to this website and scroll down to number 187 on the list.
This file will restore your themes to original state.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

You themes are kept in C:/Windows/resources/Themes

If this doesnt fix it then you can extract the themes from your operating systems CD. Just copy over the old files.

I replaced the files with the ones I downloaded but there seems to be another problem which is the cause.

When I click on the Luna.Theme file, it wants to add it to the properties but a dialog comes up saying that the "The theme could not be loaded because the service is not running".

Well, I went into Services and it was running on Automatic.
However, when I tried to restart it it, it first tried to close it down and then it stalled. An error came up saying that "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. " Event 1053.

So the root of the problem seems to be the actual Themes Service which is not reponding and it's not shutting down. I've done this several times.

What else can I do?

apply that reg hack and then reboot your pc - check that the service is on automatic - and then start it

if the service is still failing to start you should run a system file check:
start>run > sfc/scannow
it will replace corrupt files, if not and your services stack is totaly corrup then you may have to run a repair from the xp installation

by: JetheatPosted on 2005-10-21 at 16:32:29ID: 15136321

When I clicked on the reg file, it gave me an error saying

"Cannot import Themesfix.reg.  The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

If I go into the registry editor, I don't know where I should save it to.

Anyway, I did try the regfix from the download location earlier.

The problem is not about starting a service. When I log into windows, its already started and still Luna wont load.
So I try to stop it and thats when it points out the error.

So, its definitely a Themes services error.

It finished its check although I had to press RETRY 100 times.

I think it missed lots of files from the SP1 CD.

Anyway, there was no error at the end of it.

What now?

Have you tried using System Restore to go to a restore point just prior to the time the problem occurred?  This simple procedure has helped me many times.

by: d3xt3rPosted on 2005-10-21 at 19:21:08ID: 15136793

In xp pro the service was changed from a manual service startup to automatic, god knows why.
Install the sp2 update if you don't already have it.
If you do then reinstall it, this will replace your themes files.

Also try stopping the service then restarting and setting to automatic.

by: JetheatPosted on 2005-10-21 at 21:20:29ID: 15137069

1) I tried System Restore but it doesn't work. I have tried it 3 times with different checkpoints but the computer is "unable to be restored".

2) I've been using SP1 all this time for over a year with no problems and I've purposely stayed away from SP2 as some of my software is incompatible with it.
Is there a way to try this without SP2?

3) When I try to stop the service, I get the error.

This also means that even though the Themes Service is started, it's not really. It may just show it as started.

Maybe you had a hard drive problem and the files are missing.

Locate the following folder (%windir% is your windows directory)

%windir%\Resources\themes
You will find the following files:
- Luna.theme
- Windows Classic.theme
and a directory called
Luna

Enter <Luna>, you will have:
- Luna.msstyles 4093 KB
and a folder called
- Shell
Enter <Shell>
I have three directories there
- Homestead
- Metallic
- NormalColor

Each of them contains a file called shellstyle.dll
Maybe one of them is missing.

If one or two of them are missing try to copy them from a working windows XP. If not possible you may try to extract them from the windowsXP-CD (trough extract.exe).

Just write if you need help with this.

by: JetheatPosted on 2005-10-22 at 06:34:40ID: 15137972

Thanks,

All the required files are there.

The problem remains with the Themes Service which is not running and therefore is the cause of the entire problem.

Any idea on how to solve that?

Try booting up with your XP CD and running repair!

ok, I'll try that. Hope it doesn't wipe my files out.

I tried to run the repair but when I pressed Enter on the first prompt,
it said that it could not detect my hard disks.

My Hard Disks are connected via SATA and so I don't know what the problem is.

Probably. Du you have a drivers disk for your motherboard or SATA card?

It's possible to specify additional drivers during the boot process of the rescue CD.

Just press F6 when the blue "Window Setup" Screen appears.

A New Problem has cropped up.

During the repair process, the installation asked for the location of VIAVGA.sys file or VGAVIA.sys or something like that.

Since I didn't know where it was, I pressed cancel and let the installation continue.

Then,  when I arrived in Windows and tried to reinstall my ATI drivers so that my screen can work at full resolution, it said it couldn't do it and I should at least start by using standard VGA Drivers.

I rebooted the computer and now it arrives at a blank screen. I know Windows is working but I just cant see it. It boots up fine until it gets to the login screen which is shown Blank.

I have a ATI Radeon 9550 Graphics card. WHat do I do to be able to see the screen again?

The file name is VIAAGP1.sys and its part of a 4 in 1 download from the VIA site.

I have downloaded that but its an extractable file. Not just a .sys file. How do I get that into Windows when it asks for it?

by: chookisaPosted on 2005-10-22 at 17:51:24ID: 15139972

ok, search for a file called uxtheme.dll, delete all instances you find that are not in C:\Windows\system32
rename the one you do find in system32 to uxtheme.old (you may need to go into safe mode to do this and unprotect your system files)
run sfc/ scannow (again ;) )
hopefully that will replace it - then go back and see if you can start the service

the only thing that calls it is svchost - so unless you have something hijacking it - maybe you can download hijack this and post up a log to be safe anyway - i cant figure this one out!!!

anyway - when your done move off of luna and get this:
http://www.tgtsoft.com/prod_sxp.php

by: chookisaPosted on 2005-10-22 at 18:05:34ID: 15139995

also, as this is bugging me now -
go to start>run paste in
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\themeui.dll

and see if that dosnt fix it - that will re-register themeui.dll the other half of the themes service.

I strongly suggest you install the SP2 service pack as mentioned in my post above.
Apart from the seriously serious security fixes, it will also replace your xp theme files.

Now that you have repaired windows you will need to go STRAIGHT to the windows update website and apply all the updates.
You will have more than theme problems very quickly unless you do this. Then install SP2 update.

by: JetheatPosted on 2005-10-23 at 07:22:47ID: 15141335

ok, I've done everything as suggested.
I renamed the uxtheme.dll and created a new one with the scan.

I also re-registered themeui.dll but when I reboot, my desktop reverts back to the Classic theme.

I've been using SP1 now for several years and had no problems. I can't install SP2 because of compatability problems.

Here is the HiJack This log:

Every time I reboot, the theme reverts to Classic.

However, if I choose a theme other than the XP theme, it doesn't revert.

So, what's wrong and how can I fix it?

dude, first thing you want to do is download spybot, adaware and clear all the spyware off of your machine.

so it is now keeping themes?
>>However, if I choose a theme other than the XP theme, it doesn't revert.

then if thats the case, your problem is solved, but your XP theme is now corrupt, fix it in the same way as mm_de said.

go to services and make sure that the themes service is set to "automatic" when you have changed the theme to a working one.

last thing i can suggest before rebuilding the machine is to check out the registry file on this thread here:
http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?t=80318

backup your own reg before importing it, if you decide to do that

by: JetheatPosted on 2005-10-23 at 11:28:32ID: 15142016

How do I import the file? Where do I place it if I import it rom the registry?

I tried all the other stuff. I replaced the files but still no joy.

What now?

backup your registry first.

open notepad copy and paste the following text in between the stars (there are two reg files to create) and go "file save as" themefix1.reg and themefix2.reg, then double click them to merge.
as this reg is nothing to do with me - you proceed at your own risk - and dont forget to back up your current registry.

themefix1.reg (only copy whats between the stars man)

When I clicked on the themefix1.reg file, a popup appeared telling me that it was not a registry script and that I can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

Now what?

JH

>>Now what?

??? rebuild pal, or upgrade to sp2

by: JetheatPosted on 2005-10-23 at 13:57:52ID: 15142409

No, How do I get the registry file to work? How do I make it a reg file? How do I import it into the registry.

This has to be taken care of first.

JH

by: chookisaPosted on 2005-10-23 at 14:17:55ID: 15142460

firstly, read my comments on saving a reg file above.

secondly, dont be rude to people that are spending time trying to help you out.

both reg files import fine - here they are created and zipped http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IJMN5AYM

if you get a message saying some keys were not written as they are in use, boot back into safe mode.

be rude again and i shall cease to assist you.

Chooksia, I wasn't being rude. I'm saying that Rebuilding and Upgrading to Sp2 is not an option as I know this can be fixed and you are doing fine with helping me.

So, I wanted to go further with the registry files.

Anyway, I'm booting into safe mode now. We'll see how that goes.

I just returned from Safe Mode and when I clicked on the file, it said "Error accessing Registry" The test file worked fine and regstered ok.

Is there another way to get the stuff in the registry?

did you double click the files or go to regedit and import?

you should* be able to do the second file by double clicking it in normal windows

eitherway - right click the file, go to edit - this will open the file in notepad

open regedit and check what keys imported and what ones didnt, then you will have to manually make the keys and the strings of the missing ones

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/app_info/regedit.htm

this is a guide on how to work with the registry - how to create keys and the correct strings etc

ok, I'm doing this manually now but I'm coming across some Hex values yet my registry just shows a path such as %SystemRoot%\system32\themeui.dll,7

Should I replace the path with the hex value?

if so, how do I enter the Hex value. That webpage you gave doesn't seem to show me how to do that.

Also, the .reg file uses this: @="themefile" Does @ represent the default icon?

Oh yeah, in addition to the above, its also got:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_THEMES\0000\Control]
"*NewlyCreated*"=dword:00000000
"ActiveService"="Themes"

Newly Created entry is not there. Does this mean I create one called *NewlyCreated* or do I do something else?

I tried creating a new entry but it just wouldn't let me do it.

I also tried changing another entry because that was the only thing that was different but it wouldn't let me do that either.

How can I change them?

Hi, Still looking for a way to get my Windows XP theme working. Every time I reboot, it still reverts back to Windows Classic.

Any suggestions,

Check that the file Ntuser.ini exists on your machine and has not been overwritten by something like windows blinds.

Thanks D3,

Now I have managed to solve the problem by creating another user account and copying everything over excluding the 3 nt files in docs and settings.

I just had to transfer over my emails etc.... and that was it.

Hope there are no side effects.
