Note: This information is intended for a network administrator.  If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain maple.onetechonline.com:

The error was: "DNS server failure."
(error code 0x0000232A RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.maple.onetechonline.com

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS servers used by this computer contain incorrect root hints. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with following IP addresses:

192.168.0.1

- One or more of the following zones contains incorrect delegation:

maple.onetechonline.com
onetechonline.com
com

Happykev,

First can you provide with more information such as:

Do you have your own DNS Servers? If so can you post at least the last octect?

What is the IP setting in the XP pro machine with the problem, DHCP or static? If static what DNS servers are you using, and gateway?

Can you ping your Domain controller or your DNS servers (if any)?

The problem seems to be that the machine can contact the DNS server that the request is going through, it can be that is the wrong DNS server, there is no DNS server, or simple is an IP that doesn't belong to a DNS server.

Thanks,

Hi guy,

Your problems may raise because of your Primary DNS which is install at your PDC. Where did this err msg come from? The server or XPPro client?

IF this err msg is from server....
Try to this (It may be err because of the dcpromo process)
http://www.petri.co.il/troubleshooting_dcpromo_errors.htm

Try this topic if you need to re-install the primary DNS. (Remember to restart the Server)
http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/w2k3/services/DNS_install_zones.htm

Do not change the root hint of the Primary DNS. It may cause lost contact to outside world.
This topic will help you on what is the root hints.
http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/w2k3/services/DNS_root_hints.htm

You may need some support tool to verify the DNS and RPC server is working well...
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/library/TechRef/4d8388e6-6ba0-4f08-b1d9-525bf949fa76.mspx

If necesssary (this is the first client you join the domain), dcpromo again.

If this err msg is from Client...
... (Some time you just need to re-join the domain...) according the err, it will not be the err from clients. If yes, may I know only this client? This is the first client which you try to join the domain?

It seems that you have your DNS server defined as a root server.
If you look at the DNS configuration, do you have a forward zone named '.'?
Delete it and all should be fine.

hernandez599.

Let me answer your questions first.

First can you provide with more information such as:

Do you have your own DNS Servers? If so can you post at least the last octect?
NO, The windows server DNS is the only one.

What is the IP setting in the XP pro machine with the problem, DHCP or static? If static what DNS servers are you using, and gateway?

The IP setting is set to automatically obtain IP address now. It's DHCP by my D-Link DSL rounter.

Can you ping your Domain controller or your DNS servers (if any)?
Yes, on my pro workstation, i can ping it with no problem. I can even access shared files on the server now.

TO answer JacksonQuan's question.
Your problems may raise because of your Primary DNS which is install at your PDC. Where did this err msg come from? The server or XPPro client?
The err msg is coming from the Pro workstation when i was trying to join the PDC.

To Arnold, i can't find the foward zone you have mentioned about.

For better understanding, i have captured both workstation and server in a video mode.

This is my DNS setup on the server:
http://www.friendphotos.com/video/support/DNSoverlook.wmv

This is the error when i was joining the domain ont he pro workstation.
http://www.friendphotos.com/video/support/joiningdomainerror.wmv

Thank you for all your help.

By the way, i am using the D-Link DSL router now.  So, the DHCP server is builded in the rounter.   The Router ip is 192.168.0.1    and the server ip is 192.168.0.102
pro workstation is  192.168.0.XXX

OK I saw all I needed to see.
your maple delegation does not seem to be correct.

Instead of using the change button on the workstation to join the domain, you should use your first instinct and use the network button to go through the wizzard to join the work station into the domain.

What is the purpose for the maple subdomain?
You have redmaple defined on the domain and as redmaple.maple.onetechonline.com.

When you went through the _msdcs.onetechonline.com directory, it had a lot of things missing gc, dc, pdc, domains.  This leads me to believe that you did not properly setup the active directory. Did you go through the configure my computer wizard, dcpromo?

HappyKev,

The videos came in really handy; the problem is that you are trying to join a domain that doesn't exist or the DNS is not configured properly. Delete the DNS configuration and recreate it, ensure that you are entering the proper host and IP address when creating the zones. After you do this try to join the domain again.

By the way have you tried to join the domain using the IP address of your server instead of the name? See if that works; however, like arnold mentioned the maple subdomain might be hurting the network.

Do you have Active Directory installed? If not, make sure the DNS is configured properly and then install Active Directory use the Wizards they are very helpful.

I have this issue b4.
100 % sure your DNS is corrupt.

A good DNS should have at least 4 folder:
_msdcs (Must)
_sites (Must)
_tcp (Must)
_udp (Must)
DomainDNSZones
ForestDNSZones

This is good DNS:
http://www.petri.co.il/images/ad_check4.jpg

This is bad.
http://www.petri.co.il/images/int_dns10.jpg

You may try 2 options:

1. Remove and re-configure DNS
2. Demote and promote AD (reinstall AD again)

I believe this link will help you alot...

Reconfigure your DNS, Just to make it simpler

1. Remove if there is any internet connection hooked up to your switch or computer.
2. Run DCPROMO and demote the domain.
3. After demoting the domain run DCPROMO again.
4. While promoting to Domain Controller, when it promts you to configure DNS, Select the option "Automatically install and configure DNS"
5. Hook up the clients to the server. This should work.

After promoting to the domain you can reconnect the internet back to the switch or computer.

Instead of using the Change option, you should use the Network ID wizard to join the workstation into the domain.

Go to cmd line:
Check your connection using "net use"
please clean all the connection (maping) before join domain. (net use n: /delete)

A good DNS should have at least 4 folder:

_sites (Must)
