Question

Internet Explorer Information Bar Not Showing

Asked by: dercoss

I can't get the information bar to appear when I try to install any activeX control in IE6. Particularly, when trying to access the Windows Update site it clicks but no bar appears and no activeX is installed. There is an option to follow if no bar appears but leads to a dead end.

The pc is running XP Home with SP2 and has got Zone Labs Security installed. I can't see anywhere in this app that could be blocking things and turning it off makes no difference.

Any idea's to get around this?

In IE Check:

Tools > Internet Options > Security

Select "Internet" and click "Custom Level"

Check all of the ActiveX settings and make sure they are set to prompt.

I've changed the settings and now I get a prompt but still nothing happens...

What happens when you see the prompt. Is it a yellow bar at towards the top of explorer? If so left click on the prompt. It should give you a small menu with an option to "Install ActiveX Component"

It's possible that application level security is preventing this in Zone Labs, i would test this out by disabling ZL and see if the info bar shows.

Also, i found a PAQ very relevent to the same problem you are experiencing.

Their is no prompt as such in IE. The only prompt I get is a message box that appeared after setting IE to prompt me as advised above.

I've tried disabling Zone Labs without success.

I'll fiddle around a bit longer..

What exactly does the message box say, and what options do you have when it appears?

by: jgraham0903Posted on 2005-11-15 at 11:29:31ID: 15298216

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Certificates > Untrusted Publishers.

Remove any entries listed there.

It is simply the message box you get if you asked to be prompted for ActiveX installations. I can't give you the exact message at the moment as I'm doing a repair installation and will report back shortly...

Also try this:

- Register Windows Update components.
- 1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL" (without the
quotations). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
- 2. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL" (without the

I don't think that would work as I can access msn messenger and hotmail ok. I've always found that if any of those .dll's are not registered correctly then those two apps won't work either..

Or try this:

Open Registry Editor and ensure if the UseSecBand is set to 1 in the =
following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\New Windows

call microsoft. it will be a free call as its something to do with windows update and trust me you will get your issue resolved as i had the same issue last time.

Next best option would be installing IE7 and use it for about an hour and if you see the info bar is present, then just uninstall IE7 from add/remove programs and booya you will see your IE6 back to normal again

Well, that's the point of a repair installation, isn't it? To fix things, which is what it did...

I know it's not the ideal solution from a technical point of view in case it happens again but having spent a few hours I couldn't afford to waste any more time if there was a simpler option available..
