Question

Cannot access the internet even though I have a connection and can ping web sites

Asked by: dillte

After uninstalling a few programs like Ad-aware from my machine, I can no longer access the internet. I have a good connection and my ISP has assured me that I have a valid IP address. I can also ping web sites. I have tried several things that I've found on microsoft's site, and have also tried a Winsock fix file that someone suggested but nothing seems to work. I have even re-installed Windows XP. nothing works. please help!

Do you have highspeed internet or dialup? May need DNS setting change.

thanks war1. I actually tried this winsock fix last night to no avail.

also, I have highspeed internet. thanks.

How are you pinging websites (ie: by IP or DNS name)?  And can you be more specific on the "no longer access the internet".  Is this web, email, ftp?  From the general sound of your issue, you're having DNS issues, either on your pc or through some networking equipment.  Do you have any routers or other network devices between you and the ISP?

by: dilltePosted on 2005-11-29 at 13:11:37ID: 15383485

I am pinging websites through the cmd prompt. I cannot reach a web page through explorer and my outlook email isn't working either. I don't have a router - I am connected straight to the cable modem. thanks.

Make sure you have run the proper Winsock fix.  There is call Winsockfixxp, which is a different version.

If no joy, run this script to reset your LDP layer

LSP-Fix

thanks war1 - I will try this version. what is the difference between this one and the other winsock fix?

by: war1Posted on 2005-11-29 at 14:21:40ID: 15383943

LSP-Fix, resets the LSP layer as well as the TCP/IP stack.

Some uninstalls do not work well. You migt want to verify that there's no form of SW firewall that is blocking access as a rule. That is a nice defalt, but only where you know about it. Think too of reloading the IP stack, uninnstall, and reinstall tcp, to get the bindings straightened where needed, if a winsock fix won't cure.

Validate dns while you are at it, and when checking for internet access, make sure that you are using an internet address for your machine, and that you try both the web server by name, and the IP address for the server. Possibly you have a dns issue if the name fails, but the address works.

It may even be that you need a reinstall of IE, or outlook, but I wouldn't do that just yet.

Make sure that you don't have to complete some login or connecting to ISP first, or if so, see if there is a way to install some upgrade if you need that first. AOL and a few others can be a little like that, where the IE browser is nt enabled until there is first a sign on to network (getting the essential advertisements first).

Is it possible that the uninstall took away a shared modem driver?  Isn't there a technique for allowing the computer to rebuild the driver table?

Sorry I am not providing a "sure this is it" answer.  I want to make sure you check this idea for yourself before trying it.

Hi dillte,

If you can ping the websites with URL name - then DNS is working.  Try the following with Internet Explorer, when the ping returns the IP address of the website....
http://with_the_return_IP_address to see if it works..... if not check the following in IE:

1. Tools | Internet Options | Security | Restricted sites | Sites and make sure that you don't have a wildcard restriction.
2. Tools | Internet Options | Connections and make sure that you don't have it configured incorrectly.

cheers

Okay, I have tried everything listed above and am still having the same problem. I actually just tried to access my work email and server through Microsoft Remote Desktop and it works! - in other words, my connection has to be working b/c I can get my work email, access files from their server, surft the internet, etc. However, when I log off the Remote Desktop, I can't browse web sites or get my personal mail through Outlook. When I open up Oulook (not through the remote desktop, just on my normal machine) I get an error message that says "The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly termintated by the server." However, I have tried to use two different winsock fixes and I've also tried to manually reset the TCP/IP through the cmd prompt. Still nothing works. Someone asked me to run ipconfig /all. here is what I got:

Primary DNS Suffix      :
Node Type                  : Hybrid
IP routing enabled       : No
WINS Proxy enabled    : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4:
Connection specific DNS suffix   :   hsd1.ca.comcast.net
Description :   Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connecton
Physical Address    :  00-0C-F1-73-49-AA
Dhcp Enabled         : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled:   Yes
IP Address             24.7.56.11
Subnet Mask          255.255.248.0
Default Gateway    24.7.56.1
DHCP Server          68.87.76.10
DNS Servers         204.127.202.4
                           216.148.227.68

Anyone have any other ideas?? thanks.

(1)  In your IE Tools - Internet Options - Connections tab look at the Settings for your connection.   See if you have a proxy server set.  You should NOT -- so if the button is check for this, just uncheck it.   If this is the problem, just skip the rest of this post.

(2)  Does it work if you use the IP address?
(e.g. try http://64.156.132.140    and see if this takes you to www.experts-exchange.com)

(3)  What firewall are you running?  If it has a logfile, post a page of this showing some of the IE attempts to connect.

(4)  Download Firefox (on another PC -- save to CD) and install it.   See if it works.

Hi dillte,

You probably have TCP port 80 outgoing blocked.....
>>> "The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly termintated by the server."
your firewall or IP filter is resetting the connection.

Check:
a) IP filter on your computer, start with local TCP/IP stack (one of the many places depending on what else you are running):
--- TCP/IP properties | Advanced | Options | TCP/IP filtering | Properties

b) check your host firewall

c) check for port blocking or forwarding on your router....

cheers

by: dilltePosted on 2005-12-01 at 22:15:20ID: 15402825

Gnart - I'm not sure what you mean by "check the IP filter on the computer." also, how do I check for port blocking or forwarding on my router?

thanks!

by: GnartPosted on 2005-12-01 at 22:50:18ID: 15402891

Hi dillte,

I posted the steps for checking your host IP filter above....

Start | (depending on your OS) control panel | network connection (open this)
select Local Area Connection | right-click | properties | select Internet Protocol TCP/IP | Properties
Advanced | Options | TCP/IP filtering | Properties

>> how do I check for port blocking or forwarding on my router?
what kind of router are you running?

The following information from your IPConfig /all looks a little weird...
a) Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4: (Do you have four local area connection under Network connections?)
b) Your default gateway is 24.7.56.1 (do you have static IP assigned by Comcast?)

what type of firewall are you running on your host?

Try this and let me know what you see:  http://151.200.37.20:48311

cheers

by: jonroddePosted on 2005-12-02 at 02:50:31ID: 15403636

I had the same error, turned out that someone had setup IE to use a Proxy server (In Tools->Alternatives->Connections, bottom of this page). Turned it off, and everything worked fine.

by: GnartPosted on 2005-12-02 at 14:49:16ID: 15408797

hi jonrodde,

I asked him to check the connections settings above.  I didn't get an answer so I guessed that he had it setup correctly w/o proxying.... It's a cablemodem from home so I doubt that proxy has been setup....

cheers

by: dilltePosted on 2005-12-04 at 10:47:55ID: 15415532

Okay, there is no filter or proxy server set up.

I am not running a router - the computer is hooked up directly to the cable modem.

I don't have four local area connections set up - this is just what my connection is named (I think I've had multiple set up before).

As for the IP from comcast - it's dynamic.

I don't have any firewalls and don't see anything when I type in the following http://151.200.37.20:48311

by: dilltePosted on 2005-12-04 at 20:31:13ID: 15417341

I am also now getting a pop-up box on my computer that says the following:

Message from Microsoft to inform you about a virus detection.

STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.
Windows has found CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS

To fix the errors please do the following:

1. Download Registry Repair from http://www.msregclean.com
2. install registry repair
3. run registry repair
4. reboot your computer

FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO DATA LOSS, CORRUPTION AND IDENTITY THEFT!
UPON USE OF CLEANER THESE WARNINGS WILL STOP

Has anyone seen this pop-up before? I had about thirty boxes pop up when I left my computer on for five hours or so...

thanks!!

by: garycasePosted on 2005-12-04 at 21:20:11ID: 15417467

That is NOT a message from Microsoft.   It's a popup designed to LOOK "official" and to induce you to install a 3rd party program (and buy it).   Just delete it.   This is, however, a good indication that you've got a bunch of spyware/adware installed on your system that MAY be a contributor to your problem.

Did you ever try step 2 from my post at Date: 11/30/2005 07:26AM PST ??
... and did you ever try using a different browser (e.g. Firefox) as I asked in step 4 of the same post??

by: GnartPosted on 2005-12-04 at 23:48:29ID: 15417816

Garycase is correct - those are Adware popup ignore them.

Hmmm, dillte:

>> I had about thirty boxes pop up when I left my computer on for five hours or so...
>> I don't have any firewalls
>> I am not running a router - the computer is hooked up directly to the cable modem.
Direct connect no NAT - no firewall - antivirus????
Not cool - without a firewall your computer lasts about 22 minutes on the Internet...... check with Internet Storm Center >> http://isc.sans.org/
Your system may have been compromised.
I recommend at least taking it offline, try to sanitize it by running adware and antivirus from write-protect disk, install anti-virus and firewall before putting it backup.
Better yet:
a) reinstall your OS,
b) install a router and at least setup Network address translation (NAT)
c) install anti-virus and adware
d) install 3rd party firewall or at the minimum use XP's firewall....

sorry, my IP changed - try the current one is  http://151.200.37.20:151.200.126.183

Gnart

by: GnartPosted on 2005-12-05 at 21:41:29ID: 15425616

Oops, sorry - I mean http://151.200.126.183:48311

BTW, you are on cable modem - it's a shared medium with your neighbors - without protection your survival time is probably a couple of minutes - if the neighbor systems are compromised...

cheers

I am still having no luck with my internet connection. I have tried the IP adresses that both Gnart and garycase suggested - nothing happened. And just to clarify Gnart, I DID have a firewall and Norton and Ad-aware but people suggested that I temporarily get rid of them to see if it helped my problem.

And I tried to install firefox browser - doesn't work.

I am stumped and am thinking about just reformatting the hard drive. I need my computer back.

Any last suggestions?

by: garycasePosted on 2005-12-06 at 20:33:51ID: 15433785

" ... I tried to install firefox browser "  ==> did it install okay?   If not, describe what you did to install it.   Or did it install fine but just not work on the internet?

A full reload is, of course, one way to get it all working again.   With difficult issues this can often be the quickest solution -- just be sure you've backed up all of your data before doing so.   And don't forget things like e-mail, favorites, address book, etc. that are probably not stored in "My Documents".

by: GnartPosted on 2005-12-06 at 21:24:31ID: 15433937

>> I have tried the IP adresses that both Gnart and garycase suggested - nothing happened.
It should time-out..... Your ICMP (ping) is working fine.  UDP may or may not be working, you can try to monitor DNS just to make sure.
but definitely TCP protocol is a problem...  try one more thing - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357

cheers

I ended up reformatting my hard drive after I tried everything you listed above.

thanks for trying!
