Question

dmboot: Failed to start volume Volume2 (C:)

Asked by: pbissett

Hi ... I get this error message in the system event viewer when I check the reason for my PC crashing.  It normally happens during game play and it's not specific to a particular game.  The game freezes so upon rebooting I get the above message in the event log.  I have searched around a bit found no solution.  Any help would be appreciated.

FYI all drivers for mainboard, video, sound etc are all up to date.

Thanks

This KB article seems to apply:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236086

The fix looks risky.  You should definitely get a good backup of everything before attempting it.

On a RAID-configured volume this message indicates that one drive failed (or is otherwise unavailable) so now the data is protected by the RAID redundancy. Verify the hard drives and replace and rebuild the RAID as necessary as the data is now vulnerable.

Shift-3 - that kb article seems to be the issue but I want to be sure I get everything right before I attempt it.  The first issue I have is then when I backup the main HDD the ASR program doesn't ask me to insert a floppy as it's apparently supposed to.  It backs up all the selected folders but I'm of the understanding that I need the ASR floppy to recover my system data in case it gets KO'd when I fiddle around with the diskprobe tool.  So I need a way around that as it seems my OEM version of XP might be the culprit.

The second thing is I have no freakin' idea how to work diskprobe! LOL.  I want to be sure I'm saving the MBR when I try so I'm wondering if there's a way I can check it's been done correctly?  The help available in the utility doesn't seem to offer me any assistance.

Again, any help would be very much appreciated.

Are you using XP Home?  It doesn't support ASR restores (though the backup set can still be restored after the OS is reinstalled).  See here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_backup.htm

Disksave.exe from the NT Resource Kit appears to be more friendly than Diskprobe and can be run from a DOS floppy.  You can download it here:

Here are instructions on both commands:

I have XP Pro, and I'm now one step closer thanks to those links.  But before I go any further I want to be sure I can restore the MBR if XP doesn't start up after I fix it with diskprobe.  I have a copy of the MBR but one of those links says it needs to be on either a DOS bootable floppy or a Windows bootable floppy.  If I boot up with the XP cd then I believe I'll only be able to use the recovery console utilities which neither disksave or diskprobe are a part of.  It's starting to feel like a reformat would have been easier LOL.

I'm assuming you have a floppy drive.  If not then ASR won't work anyway (stupid, stupid design on Microsoft's part).

Format a floppy and check the "Create an MS-DOS startup disk" box.  Extract STORMGMT_FILESYS_disksave.exe from sp4rkx86.cab in the NT Resource Kit Support Tools.  Rename it disksave.exe and copy it to the floppy.

Boot off the floppy and type DISKSAVE at the prompt.  Back up the MBR and boot sector to, say, A:\MBR.BIN and A:\BOOTSECT.BIN.

If you need to restore, first boot off the floppy.  Restore the MBR and boot sector and see if Windows boots from your hard drive.  If not, boot off the Windows CD and run the ASR.
