Batch conversion of .MOV files to XviD or .mpg

Asked by davidgareau in Operating Systems Miscellaneous

I have thousands of files as .avi (mostly XviD and some DivX) and also some .mpg files.
I now have a new group of a few hundred .mov files.
I installed the Quicktime player, but am not at all happpy with it.

I want to Batch convert the .mov files to preferably XviD .avi files I have seen some people ask about ways to do individual files, but I want to do them all at once.

I don't mind paying for software, so if there is something, although expensive, that will do this fast, please say so.

I've heard Adobe Premiere might be able to, though I don't know.

Btw... is there any reason I would want to keep them as .mov files, are they better quality or something?

thanks
