The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Which AntiVirus programs cab be trusted NOT to hog resources?

Here's the thing. Most PCs I see are home user PCs, usualy using XP home or win98.  The most common problem I see is slow PCs.  The most common reason is the antivirus program.  Of course it's usually not JUST the AV prog. It's usually that something came along, and kicked ccapp (norton) into ultra-high gear, or whatever.  BUt the quickest way I can fix it is uninstall norton, or mcafee, or whoever the offender is.

So when everything is OK, right now, BUT a guy needs a new AV prog... I'm reluctant to recommend any.

Example -- this guy has a nice little 600mhz PC, that's running win2k, really well (except for one thing -- diff post). POint is, it's fast for a little 600mhz pc.  But his norton 2003 is expired.

This is precisely the sort of situation where, for example, I might say, "even tho IT people hate NORton, norton seems to be treating you OK for now, so let's try to update your subscription" -- so we to pay for a new NAV2003 subscription, but only after downloading is it clear that they've sold us a new version, NIS2005, and it fourks up his PC, which is never fast again, even if we uninstall NIS2005.

OR, I install AVG Free and ewido, and immediately have to unisntall EWIDO becuase it likewise grinds things to a halt. So then I install add Spybot to replace the Ewido - and get the friggin "bad checksum" error, so it never updates. So I try the microsoft antispyware....  (Just kidding)

****
POint is -- IF my goal is to protect these guys WITHOUT slowing down their PCs -- is there some resource I can use, or a rule of thumb, on How to be conservative on using resources, but still protect them?
