Question

Net send...

Asked by: rodimymum

Hi Guys,

Trying to get net send to work but it aint.

I am using XP Home and SP2 on both machines. The messenger service are on automatic on both machines but still getting  error:
'An error occurred while sending a message to ITALY.
The message alias could not be found on the network
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2273.'

I have read that there is a problem with XP and SP2 but can't find a proper solution.

Secondly, when I run \\italy\C$ error states that the 'network path was not found'
Why when i can access shared folders??

Can someone help please...

Do you have a firewall on one / both of the machines?
If so look in the firewall logs to see if it is being dropped.

Have you tried sending the message to the IP address rather than the name of the machine

Try connecting to ITALY using the IP address i.e

\\192.168.0.1\c$ for example

This could be a DNS issue.

by: questcomputingPosted on 2006-03-13 at 05:40:02ID: 16173933

Hopefully you know how to see what IP address your computer is???

If not goto,

Start
Run
Type cmd
then type ipconfig at the dos prompt

Nope,
Still coming up with 'path not found' when I type IP address (\\192.168.0.1\c$)..
Sorry

IP address needs to be the IP address of the computer you are trying to connect to i.e IP address of ITALY.

Do not use my example as the correct IP address.

Go to the ITALY computer and run the ipconfig cmd as per my post above.  Then try to re-connect to it using that IP address

Hi,
go to run and type cmd >>> enter >>> ipconfig
go to second pc and do the same >>> then ping italy or try to ping italy IP
make sure you have same IP class in both PC i mean same subnet mask like 255.255.255.0
if your IP correct try to disable windows firewall
start >>> settings >>> control panel >>> windwos firewall >>> select off

Try and get back if you still have any issue

Regards

Hi,

1. XP home does not have the adminstrative share c$, so you will have to share a folder yourself.

2. In the advanced tcp/ip properties for both the machines make sure that Use NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.

Regards,

Jacques

i know an answer has already been accepted...

but for net send to work on xp home, the messenger service must be enabled. (the messenger service i am talking about it NOT windows messenger or msn messenger)

to do this:
control panel>>administrative tools>>services
scroll down to messenger
double click it (or right click properties)
change startup type to "automatic"
click ok
single click on messenger service (where you double clicked last time)
right click>>start

messener service must be enabled in all computers involved in net sending. (sender and reciever)
good luck

Thank you for the points. I'm sorry taht I could not give you both answers.

If mehul_kar is correct about the net send, please give him half.

Jacques
