A client has illegal XP Pro.... he wants to go legitimate and has windows 98se and a retail boxed XP Pro Upgrade ...please read on

Hi there.

I have someone who contacts me.

He had an illegal XP Professional installed.

The PC works fine and is all set up how he likes it.

He has the original Windows 98SE disk and COA and he has bought a factory sealed retail boxed XP Pro Upgrade.

What I wanted to know is can I use the XP Pro Upgrade disk to do a re-install of his XP but retain his current setup.

I tried to deactivate the current installation then reactivate using the new key with the upgrade but because the illegal copy does not generate a Key the microsoft people can not help. And if I click to CHANGE KEY, it says the key is not valid.....

So all i want to know is whether i can install the upgrade without having to wipe his drive clean and start again installing 98se from scratch then doing the XP Upgrade?

I hope someone can help, it just saved hassle and time really...
