Ipod Shuffle: Unable to mount/update; Anything at all!

Hey, I recently got a iPod Shuffle which I have been trying to connect to my pc for a while now (on the back into high-powered USB 2.0 port I believe)
I installed the iTunes and iPod software as was instructed.
Now, in iTunes, I get the following error upon transferring a song:
"The iPod cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to."
The iPod updater says "Cannot mount"
The Removable Disk is not in 'My Computer'
The iTunes does not understand the option of not bloody running when I connect the bloody iPod. It just launches everytime, even though I've changed the preference a few times now, when I click OK on that dialog, it says updating iPod, after a while it updates the iPod. Then I remove/reconnect it, and voila! iTunes launches yet again!
This is one of the most frustrating experiences ever. I regret missing on that Creative Zen.
And btw, I also know how to use www.google.com and I've made several searches so far.
Please help or I'll consider donating this to smashmyipod.com

have you tried to connect your shuffle on another computer?  you don't have to install itunes... it should pop up as a removable drive.  if it does not work on another computer either, i suggest returning your ipod or sending it in for warranty service.

if it works on another computer, but doesn't work on yours... uninstall itunes.  then try to connect your ipod.  if it's still not working, go to computer management (control panel->admin tools), and in computer management, go to drive management.  does your shuffle show up there?  if yes, change the drive letter.  then check and see if it's showing up in my computer.

once you have that sorted out, re-install itunes.  do your configuration of itunes before you attempt to plug in your ipod (so set the option to not have itunes automatically launch before you try to get itunes and your shuffle to communicate for the first time).  also make sure that itunes is updated.

Yep, I was planning to try it on another computer in about 2 hours. I already checked the drive management, its not there.
When I connect it , the removable drive icon shows up but disappers as soon as iTunes miracously runs without my will.

That option is only available if iPod is connected, it shows up in the iPod tab, so iPod has to be connected.

Anyway, I will get back to you with more later.

really?  i thought that option was in the installation of itunes.  maybe the newer versions of itunes don't have it during the installation....

I had this problem and the fix for me was a funny one.  I have a Dell computer with the front USB ports.  The shuffle has a big housing around the USB connector.  It turned out that it couldn't seat all the way in the front USB ports on my computer.  When I plugged it into the back ports or a USB extension cable it worked fine.

I hope this is the issue.  My Shuffle wasn't harmed.

Also, I have a LaCie Big Disk USB hard drive.  The PC won't see the shuffle if the LaCie drive is connected.  I don't know why.  So if you have any other external USB storage try disconnecting that first.  (All my tunes are on the LaCie!  Doh!)

Did you have itunes installed before you bought the shuffle? I have seen this cause problems with ipods. Best bet at this point..

1) Connect the ipod and run the ipod updater, choose to reset the ipod, this will take a moment, after it is finished disconect the shuffel.
2) Uninstall any piece of software that has to do with it, more then likely just iTunes, and the updater, but you may have more then one version, make sure you get them all
3) throw your disc back in and try it again, make sure you don't hook up the ipod until it tells you to.

I get a lot of people in who have trouble with ipods, they are very nice once you get them running, but can be a pain to get going the first time. That solution above works for me about 70% of the time, let me know if you are still having trouble. //ms

I did use to have iTunes in the past but I uninstalled it. The iPod updater simply states 'can't mount iPod' Maybe its just my usb, I still have to try on another computer. Will be back with more later.

Sometimes the usb stuff gets messed up in cmos.  Believe it or not, unplugging the A/C power from the PC as well as every USB thing and letting it cool its jets for an hour may fix the problem.  The PC hardware management, once it sees an error with a device, remembers the error, regardless of the OS, and won't forget without sitting in the timeout corner for an hour or so.

Here's another thing to try:  Resetting your shuffle.  I had to do this once.  Sorry it took so long for me to remember!

Also, the shuffle needs a high-power USB port.  To see if this is the problem, hook up a powered USB hub to your PC, then plug the shuffle into the hub.

Did the reset, I will try it on a brand new (about 1 month old) Dell PC today without installing iTunes and cluttering yet another computer. I will see if the the Removable Drive icon shows up in My Computer, if it does then I will install iTunes. If it messes up even there then I am certain that the money's gone to waste as I got this from a foreign airport =/ Sure, I could get it repaired from somewhere else but still; one pays to get a usable product, right?

Don't give up on Apple.   Give them a call if the fix doesn't work.
