Browse All TopicsI just plugged in two different USB flash drives and Windows 2000 does not have a driver for it. The install gives a Code 28 (missing driver). How do I get one - mine must have been corrupted.

Remove your Usb Drive.
Open Device Manager. Scroll Down to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
Remove the following if listed "right click uninstall:
Generic Usb Hub
Usb Root Hub
Usb Composite Device
Standard OpenHCD Usb Host Controller
Reboot
Wait till they show again in "Device Manager"
Now connect back your usb drive.
You will need some updated drivers for 2000, as its original support for USB was rather liimited. See here --

Once you have installed the new 2.0 drivers, reboot, and things should work a lot better than they did ...
Firstly, make sure the USB function is enabled in the BIOS setting and plug in the disk directly or via extension cable to rear USB port. If you are using a USB hub, make sure it's powered.
When the USB Disk is inserted into the USB port and the LED lights up, it means that the computer has detected the USB . The LED will flicker thus indicating file transfer. DO NOT REMOVE the USB disk whilst the LED is flickering or you might lose your data
Although these products are "plug and play" if you are using Windows XP, recommend that you use the "Safely remove hardware" icon in system tray to STOP device before removing.
It's possible that you may have deleted a part of the standard driver for the operating system. Please download the necessary device driver from the Microsoft Website windows updates.

When your usb drive is connected do you get an icon in device manager for it? is it registering an error there? are you using the front usb ports on your case? have you tried the back ones? are you using a usb hub?
are you running the latest service pack for 2000?
does any other usb devices work in these ports?
