Question

windows XP home edition computer runs very slow

Asked by: junebug52

My windows XP home edition has just started to run very  (extremely) slow.  I have 2.8 Gb of free space on my boot drive (C:\).  I do not believe I have any spware or viruses causing the problem.  I run webroot spyweeper (latest updated version) and the latest Nortion antivirus.  I have ran scans using both of these and found nothing.  I also run pest patrol anti sypware and it has found nothing.
I have deleted all files and cookies from my temp folder and temp internet folder.  I have deleted all restore points.  I am trying to find out if there are steps that I can take that will tell me if my problem is software related or hardware (Ram or hard drive)?
If my problem is software, I could format and run a clean windows XP install.  Its a lot of work to reinstall all the applications and setup the machine the way it is but I would embark on this if this is recommended.  I do use this computer for online school, so its availability is very important to me.
Your expert assist is definitely appreciated.

Likely needs a defrag. (And the way I defrag is to use xxcopy www.xxcopy.com to copy everything over to another drive, then re-format & xxcopy everything back. Fastest way, but I don't know if it's entirely recommended, and I haven't tried it on XP, only Win98).

But 2.8 GB free is not very much. Things start to slow down when more than 50% of the drive has been filled. and 2.8 GB left on a e.g. 80 GB drive is very little.

You can get 250 GB drives now for under $100. It's worth it to upgrade.

How much RAM do you have? At least 256 MB? (preferably  512+)

Disk cleanup tips:

1) In Internet Explorer
Tools > Internet Options > General > Settings
What value is in the "Amount of disk space to use" box? I have mine set at 50 MB, but some have it at 2 GB which is just too much.
Reduce it if need be for each user account.
Also hit the "Delete Files" button and then put check on the"Delete all offline content" box.

I would check to see how programs you have starting up when you boot windows. You can do this by going start >run>

In the run box type in   msconfig and hit enter

Click the startup tab to the far right i believe....

If you have a ton of things checked, i would check the disable all option, then check the programs that are neccessary, such as anti virus software.

This will force a reboot, but should improve performance.

If you dont have many options in your startup, let us know so we can t-shoot this further.

Three main things I would do.

Defrag the hard drive, preferably with a good defragmentor like Diskeeper.
At least 512MB of RAM, considering RAM modules are dirt cheap these days.
Reclaim more HDD space.

Are you on a network when the slowness occurs, or is it when you are working offline as well? If it is all the time, that narrows it down to the pc.

The first thing to try is go into Task Manager and look at your CPU and Memory utilization. It is likely your CPU is getting taxed and will be anywhere from 50-100% if there is a problem. If so, see what process is causing this and then try to resolve by removing that process (application, spyware, etc) from your registry's Run section (back up registry first before making any changes) - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run.  Sometimes with spyware it may get more involved than this, but this is a good start.

I hope this helps.

Uninstall all unused and rarely-used programs.

Do a disk check.

Defrag the hard drive.

2.8gb is REALLY low by today's standards.

Oh and do a Disk Cleanup before the defrag.

Go to Task manager (Right cick on task bar and select Task Manager) and select performence chekc the CPU and Memory usage and you will come to know which program is causing the systems for low performence. Kill the process if you can, otherwise uninstall the program.

If you have so many programs running in startup, system performence may be slow. So go to Start -- Run....
type "msconfig" and go to Startup, uncheck all the unnecessary programs which are loadding evrytime in memory.

check if the disk is running in PIO instead of DMA :
device manager>IDE/Atapi controllers>right click the primary controller>properties>advanced tab.
if it is PIO, here is how to set it to dma :
this is a harmless registry edit -- the deleted values will be reset by Windows at next boot

Load RegEdit (Start - Run - Regedit)

Go to the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x

The last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on.

Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values:

     MasterIdDataChecksum
     SlaveIdDataChecksum
If you do not have an entry for ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess, at each of the keys (0001, 0002, 0003, etc.) you should add a DWORD value named "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess" with a value of 1 in each folder (e.g., "0001", "0002", "0003", etc.)

check if the windows updates is running, there is a huge download going on, have you seen any icon on the shutdown stating shutdown for updates to install?
open the task manager look above VIEW click on this select coloumns add virtual memory size. Now look at your processes.

Look and see if windowsupdates is running. there may also be a small yellow icon on the taskbar may be hidden.
delete your temporary internet files. history.
look in control panel administrative tools event viewer applications.
How many programs running on the rightside of the taskbar exit some. keep your task manager open so you can see when your cpu usage peaks and drops off.
run a system file checker at start run type in sfc /scannow press enter
update drivers for display.

I use webroot spy sweeper and pest patrol software and they are updated.  I have run the full scans for spyware and NAV antivirus, so I am confident that my problem is not associated with any foreign invaders.  I also have used executive diskeeper defrag for an extended period and its set to automatically defrag the system.  It works very well, so my problem is not related to needing a defrag.  I have previously deleted all my temp and temp internet files.  I have no excess in that department.  I run 512 MB of ram.  My problems seems to be related to a possible hard drive or memory (RAM) issue.  The RAM has been installed since early 2003.  The hard drive defrag map shows  numerous large areas that will not defrag.  I am not sure if this is indicating a failing hard drive.  Your expert assist is appreciated.

2.8 free is tiny...
What's the total drive capacity? If 2.8 is all you have left & can't free up anymore, then it's time to upgrade the drive.

by: MeretePosted on 2006-07-27 at 23:47:52ID: 17198783

if your defrag is not covering the entire hdd at first this may not be an actual problem, if you running a computer like Del or HP as this operating system has a hidden partition for recovery.
How old is the HDD? You didnt confirm if windows updates is running.
Also look in control panel administrative tools event viewer.

Otherwise it maybe way lots of restore folders, go to your start all programs accessories system tools disc cleanup let it calculate then in the more options dlete all but the most current restore points, otherwise look in your c windows for the restore folders and see if there is large amounts of these.
You can run a chkdsk /r from recovery console.

There are a couple of ways to run a disk check in Windows XP.
Tell Windows to run it at start-up or start from a Windows XP CD and run it from the recovery console
Illistrated
http://www.housing.hawaii.edu/resources/support/chkdsk.htm

You can also run a read only chkdsk from start run type in chkdsk C:  press enter

Also check your ram indeed.

1st. Free more space on your boot drive.
2nd. Check the DMA status of your HDD, if ti isn't on you can turn it on
but the best is to reinstall the IDE CONTROLER. ->

Right click on my computer, select propertires and then check the HARDWARE card.
Press the first button DEVICE MANAGER and go to IDE ATA / ATAPI controlers.
right click on the primary and delete it with uninstal.
Then reboot... When the pc boots again it will install again the device with default setings.
You are OK!
