Question

Automatic Login MCE Login Screen and Asking for Password. I want Windows Media Center to boot straight into windows without login screen.

Asked by: BennyM82

Hi,

I have recently installed Windows XP Media Center edition.  Some software I have installed has configured my computer so that I need to click on the 'Administrator' login on the Welcome Screen every time my computer turns on.
Previously it logged straight on.
I have tried creating a password, and then deleting it, disabling and enabling the welcome screen.
I just want the computer to log straight in without a Welcome or Login screen when turning on or coming out of standby.

Does anyone know how to do this?  Thanks very much for your help!

Hi BennyM82,

This looks likely to have been the problem - a rogue update to .net

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827072

There is a detailed fix on that page, or you can just edit the registry and force it to logon automatically

Hope that helps,

Thanks for your prompt reply red!  I didn't think I had installed dotnet on there, I thought that it happened when I installed the video card driver software I required, though it could have been during the windows updates.
Does Autologin work for coming back from Standby mode also?
When I get home I will try it and post feedback.

Hi BennyM82,

I am pretty sure that it works coming back from standby, but I will have to test it to be sure.  I use the registry keys on my desktop machines at home, and they never go on standby.

Let us know how you get on

Don't autologin as administrator, that opens the system to all kinds of malicious things. You should create a separate user and login to that, if necessary automatically.

You can use the XP powertoys (tweakui) to setup autologins and also setup your system individually.
