I should have mentioned.
The build is a scripted install, not a riprepped image, therefore I have to "inject" the setting via either a script of registry key.

I'm thinking you can create a script that will edit your registry along the lines of this:

Since XP and 98 and 2003 dynamically assign drive letters depending on the hardware they detect at each boot, there is NO WAY to script a drive letter that is guaranteed to stay on initial boot, if you could, you would freeze the OS, as you would have to stop the dynamic drive reassignment function in the OS. You can ASSUME that if there is only one hard disk, the CD/DVD will be drive D -- and this will hold, until someone plugs another hard disk, a SATA drive, or a host of other devices....

Just change your drive letter on the master image to W: and your future images should look the same. Go into "computer managment" and right click on cdrom and select change drive...
