The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Unable to reinstall XP

Hi all,

I need to reinstall XP Pro on a machine* that is roughly 5 years old (the original hard drive is showing signs of imminent failure and I have put a new one in). It is the original XP Pro CD, i.e. pre-SP1, and was only ever installed on this computer, so all legit. I have kept Windows fully updated and the result is that when I try an install from within Windows I get the message

"Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on your CD. ..."

anyway the Continue button is grayed so I click details which gives me this:

To install the version on the CD, restart your computer, boot from this CD, and follow the instructions for a new installation.

Trouble is, when I do that, I get the message NTLDR missing and then, even though I have changed the BIOS boot sequence to CD drive alone, it still boots from the hd. Help!!

*Bios Amibios 5.7 (latest), Athlon 1800+, 512mb, XP SP2, new power supply, Geforce 6600GT
