The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Got another "ggod one" for you guys.......... Direct X issues.

Asked by DuVall in Operating Systems Miscellaneous

Hello,

Some of you may recognize my username - I'm the guy with the Chinese wife who has the Chinese version of windows xp on her machine.... Anyway, I have another huge problem now.

I had a need to re-format her drive and re-install windows. She had it all messed up and so full of chinese viruses - I had to do something. it was runnig at a snails pace!   :(    :(    :(

As you may or may not be aware of - just about every chinese computer is running on boot-leg software - you cannot even buy legal software in China! She just now tell me this.........I really did not know this until I went to re-install windows for her :(    :(    :(

The software installed - but will not activate!!!  Even though her disk has a serial number on the cover - and it types in - MS website will not activate it because it says it is not a legal copy.    :(     :(     :(

I have two problems:

1) I don't know what is going to happen when the 30 days expires? I don't know it it keeps running or if it will terminate running - as it would if it was an American illegal copy? she has 3 disks total..... The one I used seems to be a regular copy of win xp in chinese - with serial number. One other disk says it is a corporate edition. The last one also has a serial number - that does not work. I choose the disk I used because it seem to have the least amount of scratches on it - even though  they are all new - ha ha

The second problem is that she has games on the machine that require Direct X version 8 or higher........THESE GAMES ARE HER ENTIRE LIFE - IT IS ALL SHE HAS HERE THAT SHE TRULY ENJOYS.........  I'm assuming she has a lower version of direct X because several of her games will not run properly. And without windows being activated - I cannot get the Direct X from MS...... :(     :(     :(

Here is my question.......... finally:

Can I take the corporate edition disk and install it over the existing installation and expect it to run without the need of activation or a serial number?????  If not - what is my solution - short of buying a legal copy of chinese windows?  The MS website says that for $150 they will make my copy legal and provide me with a valid serial number................. Is this my only option?   I thjought that the corporate edition does not require a serial or activation - am I correct? But now that I used the other disk - is there anyway to correct my problem?

Next - assuming I do nothing and the windows does continue to run without being activated - Is there anyway to get the Direct X without going through the MS website?????  Surely this program exists somewhere on a disk???

I sure hope you guys can help me out again. She is going to be really lost without her computer and games. It is not only her only source of entertainment - but this is her only connection with her friends and family back in China!!!

Thanks,
duvall
