Question

Error 1068 on Smart Card Helper

Asked by: mbart

I have upgraded for Server 2000 to 2003 and now my USB Smart Keyboard won't work for the smart card portion.  I set the smart card service to start automatically and it seems to be working fine.  But the Smart Card Helper which is set to Manual gives 1068 error when I try to start it.  I also have a pmcia card reader which does not work now either.  Under 2000 I had to use the Smart Card Helper because it was a legacy piece.  Not a novice but am definatley not an expert.  Need fast help because I need the Smart card reader to access work sites.

I would check to see if the manufacturer of your smartcard has released a driver for Windows 2003 for the smartcard reader(s).

Also Microsoft has some hotfixes available for smartcard issues.  I would look in your Event Logs to see if you have any events that match the following KB articles from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909539/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811943/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919922/en-us

If none of the above work, and there are no event logs to point you in another direction you might need to upgrade to a smartcard reader that Windows 2003 recognizes (is on Hardware Compatibility List for Windows 2003).

The driver update seems to be a problem.  Downloaded an updated driver that is supposed to be for 2003 but can't install the driver.  System keeps saying that the current driver is the most current.  Current driver is dated 9/2003 and version 2.0.0.12 but the driver approved for 2003 is dated July 2004 and version is 1.0.0.2  How can I replace the current driver with the correct one?

Uninstall the current driver.  You may want to remove the device before uninstalling it to prevent Windows from auto-identifying the device and reinstalling it's driver upon reboot.  After rebooting (after the uninstall of the driver) reconnect the device which should trigger the "found new hardware" wizard.  Tell it that you want to specify the driver and select the driver that you have downloaded.

I will try uninstalling it again.  Have tried previously but it says found new hardware and loads the wrong driver automatically.  Have just install SP2 so maybe that will help.

Another option is to uninstall the driver and when it says found new hardware cancel it.  Then manually execute the hardware installation wizard, select the type of device that you want to install and then select the driver that you downloaded.  It if is the wrong type of driver for the device it will tell you and ask you if you're sure you want to continue.

Hi mbart,

Is the "Plug and Play" service set to Automatic, and running? Smart Card service depends on "Plug and Play"

by: mbartPosted on 2006-12-12 at 07:06:22ID: 18122871

When I uninstall the driver and then plug the keyboard in again I don't get an opportunity to cancel.  It says found new hardware Dell USB Smart Card and then changes to generic USB Smart Card Reader and says it is loaded and ready.

by: mbartPosted on 2006-12-12 at 07:49:40ID: 18123293

I checked the event log and found the following error on the scardsvr
Dell USB Smartcard Reader 0 rejected IOCTL Get_State access denied.

How do I get around this?

Have you tried using the dell smartcard reader diagnostic tool - it is referenced here:

I will have to find the CD referenced.  Have had the keyboard for a long time and have only the had the problem when I upgraded to server 2003.
