Question

the win 16 subsystem has insufficent resources to continue running

Asked by: DFlaschen

I am running Windows XP Pro.  I have 1.5 GB of RAM.
I sort of understand this error.  It is saying "you have too many programs open".  However, I think there has to be a workaround.  I have seen this error in the past, but now I am seeing it more than ever, and it's a ROYAL PAIN.  I am running an old compiler - that is the program that gets the error.  I have heard this has something to do with AUTOEXEC.NT.
Thank you

start
run

I already use MSCONFIG and AutoRuns (from SysInternals) to only start the programs I WANT to run at Startup.
I tend to run a lot of programs at once.  I notice that if I shut down some of those programs, I get the error less - but I still get it more than I used to and more than I can tolerate.
Maybe I need to run this program in a Virtual Machine.

You could do that or try and increase your swap file

What exactly - technically - is this message saying to me?

Maybe I can answer my own question:
I found this: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/Q_21549579.html
I'm going to give it a try.  I may have already tried this - unsuccessfully.  Let's see if it helps.

Marine7275: I am rethinking your answer.  I am shutting down Google Deskbar and other tray-represented applications.  Let's see if that helps.  I wish I understood the MECHANISM at work here and HOW TO MONITOR IT.  In the "old days", there were "TSRs - Terminate and Stay Resident" programs.  They took up your precious-little RAM and you had to get rid of them or programs wouldn't run.  Am I in the same situation here?

Most often I've found you can fix 16 bit subsystem errors by restoring backup copies of the autoexec.nt and config.nt files.

Reference:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/16bit.htm

However, I've seen instances where this applies:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q254914&

an instance where this was the solution:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21549145.html#14811674

(btw:Windows=95 Compatibility checkbox did NOT solve my problem.)
LeeW: This is NOT the error I am getting.  I have seen this error before - this error indicates the 16-bit program will-not-start.  That is NOT the problem I am experiencing.
The links you have provided deal with a 16-bit application "not-starting".  That is NOT my situation.  My programs start - they just "crap out" and quit.  I have a different problem.  I may be wrong that these are really the same problem, but that doesn't appear to me to be the case.  thank you.

I think I've figured this out.
If I shut down the Google Desktop - getting rid of the tray icon, my problem goes away.

marine7275 is right.  I am agitated (and overwhelmend).  Do not close this question.
It is not marine7275 (or anyone else's fault) that I am agitiated.
Leave this question open.  I will award points shortly.
Thanks.

I have come to notice the following:
CLOSE INTERNET EXPLORER.
This often eliminates the error and allows you to continue without rebooting.
