Browse All TopicsHi guys,
How many concurrent connetions are allowed to enter a shared folder at "one time (single shot)" for an win xp pro and win xp home computer.
Example scenario:
1 windows xp pro hosting a folder.
How many clients can get into the machine at a single time assuming that the hardware is good?
What I heard was that only 10 nodes are allowed to enter a win xp pro shared folder.
Please provide links for evidance.
Thanks
Regards,
chobo

Inbound connections limit in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.c
This is a licensing issue. If you need more than 10 connections, you're supposed to buy Windows Server.
The Windows XP Pro License says:
"1.3 Device Connections. You may permit a maximum of ten (10) computers or other electronic devices (each a "Device") to connect to the Workstation Computer to utilize one or more of the following services of the Software: File Services, Print Services, Internet Information Services, Internet Connection Sharing and telephony services."

The above is correct, 10 for Pro, 5 for Home, but there is a work around
a work around is to change the auto disconnect time on the pc's
lower it, and it will free up the connection so another user can use it

Open your registry and find the key below.
Modify the value, or create a new string value, called 'Autodisconnect' and set it to equal the time in minutes before a session is disconnected.
Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
Note: Set the value to 0xffffffff to disable the disconnection function.
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
Autodisconnect REG_DWORD 0xffffffff (4294967295)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
Parameters]
Value Name: Autodisconnect
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)

Please accept my apologies - I wasn't aware of the implications.
You've probably answered the question aswell. If Microsoft has imposed a limit on the number of concurrent connections - (a limit which appears to only be circumvented by altering TCPIP.SYS), then surely any method of altering this value will also be a violation of the Windows XP EULA?
