XP install halts due to hard drive error

I use Win_Me and recently decided to move to XP. My hard drive is Hitachi, 2 years old sata, no problems. It has FAT32 and is divided into 5 partitions, C being reserved for system files only.
I formatted drive C to wipe off Win Me fully and ran XP install disc through DVD drive but , XP informed me that the hard drive was absent or not working and halted. When this happened twice, I re-installed Me, which happened without any problems. I then tried to re-install XP on the top of Me as an upgrade but after the stage of copying files XP again came up with a sinister blue screen message that it had halted to prevent serious damage to my system and I should run a virus check, uninstall any recently installed hard drives or drive controller and run CHKDSK.
MY virus scan was normal, I have only one hard drive, no drive controller installed by me and a scan disk run by Win Me was normal ( I guess CHKDSK is something that is done on XP installed PCs). This halt has happened many times and always at the same stage.
What is the way out when both clean install and re-install fail and hard disk is okay for Win Me!
