Question

Windows Vista Prevents Installing PCAnywhere 11.5

Asked by: jhanks64

I had to get a new laptop and get it ready for remote control using PCAnwhere in 2 days.  The user is leaving town on Thursday 2/8 and I can't install PCAnwhere 11.5 because Vista is preventing or blocking the setup.exe from running.  Does anybody know how to get around this.  I've seen more than one listing that shows PCAnwhere 11.5 works fine in Windows Vista.

Try to install the MSI with the following parameter:

msiexec /i "[C:\Path to pcAnywhere.MSI file]\Symantec pcAnywhere.msi" IRAABOUT=1

Actually I figured out how to install it, I only need the remote connection part.  It installed fine, but no matter what I try, Program Compatability Assistant will not let me run it.  If I rename the .exe from winaw32.exe to winaw3.exe, PCA lets it go, but then I get a message saying that Group Policy is preventing it from running.  This is Windows Vista Home Premium and there is no policy editor.

did you try shutting off UAC?

by: daogurayPosted on 2007-02-07 at 11:04:31ID: 18487522

This you might have already done but i'm going to ask anyway.
Did you run setup.exe in Administrative mode ?
Go to the setup.exe, right click on it and select "Run as administrator"

Yes, I did run try running as Administrator.  I was able to get the Remote Control portion installed by going to the Packages folder and running Symantec pcAnywhere - Remote Only.exe.  That installed just fine, but won't run.  I'll try turning off UAC.

Turning off UAC does NOT allow PCAnywhere to run.  I still have the same Blocked Program problem.  I've given up.

I've been looking on the site of Symantec and it doesn't say that Windows Vista is supported.
So i think this product doesn't work with Vista. You'll have to wait for a newer version or an update.
You can ask Symantec about this, i know that they respond pretty quickly.
Good luck.

Before I gave the okay to purchase a laptop with Vista on it, I searched the net and found more than one site with a list of programs that worked with Vista.  PCAnywhere 11.5 was on at least one of those lists.  I can understand if the Host portion doesn't work with the Aero interface, but I just wanted to use the Remote Control part.  Oh well, another good reason to wait 6-12 months before getting new machines with Vista on it.

by: daogurayPosted on 2007-02-08 at 00:20:22ID: 18491983

Seems like there's something wrong with permissions if Vista isn't allowing the installation.
But you already confirmed that you start setup.exe as administrator.
If the executable is located on harddrive make sure you have the correct permissions to the folder it is in. Best thing you can do is own that folder so you know for sure that you have all the permissions.

If it's from CD = skip this info...

An advise if you want to use Remote Control.
There's an alternative and it's free also.
Real VNC
http://www.realvnc.com
it's small and it works perfectly well.

by: jhanks64Posted on 2007-02-08 at 00:37:24ID: 18492089

Thanks for the comments

It's not a permission issue, it's a Vista issue that is specifically preventing this program from installing or running.  I actually did get the remote control program installed, but still can't run it.

Thanks for the VNC suggestion, I prefer PCAnywhere for a variety of reasons, file transfer is one of them.  Oh well, I got RDP working instead.

Sorry, can't remember exactly, I think it was "program control assistant" or something like that saying that because PCAnywhere is not compatible with Vista, it is not allowed to run.  The user has already left town and I don't have another Vista computer to try it on.

by: iherrickPosted on 2007-02-21 at 06:27:32ID: 18578504

See if you can get your hands on PCAnywhere version 11.0.  Vista doesn't seem to be hardcoded to block access to that particular version.  I've had success installing and running the remote only version of 11.0 on Vista.

I've also found that Vista only blocks the last two releases of any programs, if you go retro enough, it'll run just about anything.  Something tells me if it wasn't for the hardcoding, 11.5 would run great too.  Funny how Vista won't even let you try....

I do have Version 11, I'll try that.  Thanks for the idea.

Ultimately the solution was use Remote Desktop to get the job done.  Eventually I installed PCAnywhere 12.1 and that works great.
