The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Benefits of using a mac?
Tags: using, mac, benefits
I have been using a mac a little bit lately, and I have been talking to a couple of guys who use them at home instead of a pc and they were telling me a few things about os x. They said that it is more secure than xp, easier to use, doesn't suffer from spyware and viruses etc.

I have always used a pc, and helped family with their problems and I have had a few problems too. Mostly with spyware and other bits. I just wanted to know if there is any truth to what these guys told me and how it compares with xp?

Macs have less viruses, spyware, hackers, and so on because so few people use them. Windows is used by (last stat I saw) over 93% of computer users. With around 5% on the mac and the rest on other os'. If you are writing a virus you want it to affect the most people. So you work on windows.

Ah, the age old debate. Truth is, Mac users like Macs, Wonows users like windows, and Linux users like linux.
Yes, windows suffers more viruses/spyware, but that is because they are #1 in use, and they target windows.
But there are more apps written for windows.
Which is better? this will never be answered, as it is a matter of choice

The underlying mechanisms that determine if a virus or malware/spywarewill harm your system or not, are different in windows and Unix/Linux systems. Mac OS X is partly built on Unix. In short it seems it is much more difficult to assume administrator rights and install a system-wide active software in a -nix system than in windows and that is not depending on the number of users worldwide; it's system philosophy, if you like.

Of course, it is more challenging and thus exciting and interesting to create something that will piss off a great number of people, than to make something noone ever notices, so, of course, windows is the prime target. It is not the whole answer, though, IMHO.

Macs have traditionally built very nice systems, hardware-wise. Elegant and quite long-lasting and the original idea of graphical user interface was very early adopted by Apple; they have been very user-friendly. Earlier Mac OS (up to OS 9) were horrible from a stability viewpoint, though.

At work using a PC, I work at an OEM Reseller. At home I use a mac.
For what it's worth, here's why I prefer the mac
* I use Neooffice, Office tool capable of reading/Writing MS office document, pretty neat, http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/nl/index.php so you can be compatible with the other 9X percent of computer users. it's free in some way but they do appreciate a donation!!
* I use Clamxav for antivirus, so far never found/had a virus.  http://www.clamxav.com. Apple itself refers to it http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/clamxav.html and on server version of mac os X there is a user CLAMXAV or so present, 'free' but same story, the guy who wrote it appreciates a donation!!
* Kids at home COULD be restricted by parental control by default in the OS. You can limit the websites to those given permission for. Something NOT present in XP.
* DOWNSIDE the default chat software is not compatible with the one from microsoft but it is compatible with the chat software from AOL. MS Messenger is available for the Mac platform though at the Microsoft website.
* Basically it does all I need a computer to do.
* My machine consumes around 70 Watt (measured with a meter) I have NO CLUE what a PC consumes but if it comes in two pieces I can imagine it's more.
* till a few years ago there was only one button on the mouse. Finally they got the picture and the multi-button-mouse is now a fact (I use an optical USB PC mouse with scroll and so on)
* Finally depending on the machine you have, it's goodlooking, so you can put it anywhere in the house...

Kind Regards,
Geert

Now that all of the best macs are intel based you are basically buying an overpriced PC clone that you can't even upgrade on your own... build your own intel system and load OSX on it, save thousands. I'm a Microsoft fanboy but I know OSX works great too, and I like to use it (especially for multimedia) but Apple is far too proud of their hardware to be an option for 90% of the population. You can build a clone PC for 1/4 of the price they charge you.

* True about not cheap but comparing Apple with IBM or HP then the figure of 1/4 is way over the top.
* "you can't even upgrade on your own" - depends on what you call upgrade, have a look at
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300205, the article describes how to replace (or add) memory, harddisk (replace with faster), etc
* True, you could try running OS X on a PC nowadays, how-to's are out there.
