I had this problem with XP, and continue to have it with Vista...
When I install a program (I'm logged in under my own account but belong to the Administrator's group), when it's finished, nothing shows in the Start menu. For example, when you install MS Office, when it's finished, there is a new selection in the Start Menu that says "Microsoft Office". You open this, and the various Office apps are displayed. Now, I have to go fishing in the Program Files directory, and manually create shortcuts to newly installed programs in my Start Menu.
Any idea what would cause this? Thanks.

I guess I wasn't clear enough... I'm not looking to put a shortcut on my desktop, or in the list of programs that display when Start->Programs is clicked... just the opposite. Normally when you install a program, it will add an entry to the Programs list. For example, when you install MS Office, it adds an entry under Start->Programs called "Microsoft Office". If you open that, you see all the shortcuts the INSTALL program added to the various programs that make up Office, such as Word, Excel, Etc. Windows will also highlight any new programs that have been installed under Start->Programs when you open it (providing that feature has not been turned off).
In my case, when a program is installed, NOTHING is added to Start->Programs.... I have to MANUALLY add them by creating a shortcut to the new program in the Programs list. Then I have to rename the shortcut to something friendly. This is NOT how it's supposed to work, and I'm not sure what's causing it...
This is happening for all programs; I'm not doing anything wrong - I'm a tech person myself, and have setup many networks... that's why I'm perplexed and have turned here for assistance... I've looked at group policies and other settings, and haven't found anything that would cause this behavior. This started happening about 3 months ago with XP; I was hoping that the upgrade to Vista would fix it, but it hasn't... and as I earlier mentioned, this occurs with ALL programs that install - not just Office (I just used that as an example). Again, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

That is normal behavior when installing Office . . It will put a link to Outlook on the desktop, but you have to copy any others you want on the desktop
