The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Plan to setup Aging and Scavanging for my AD-Intergrated zone in DNS

Because aging and scavenging is not turned on by default and we have had several DNS admins in the past, I am now setting this up. If I look at our ad domain name we have 32,328 resource records. We only have 4000 AD pc's. The records date back to 2003. My plan is to scavenge all records tonight that are 365 days or older. The next week, scavenge any record 180 days or older and finally permanently set up aging and scavenging at the 7 days interval that is defaulted by Microsoft. I am doing the progression as a safety precaution. I am assured that noting will go bad but I have heard that before so I would like some input into my plan. We also back up the system state every night on the DC's. I want to make sure that the DNS gets backup up so that I am protected in case of a worst case scenario. Because the zone is AD-Integrated, it is replicated to 55 other DC's (one at each remote location). The system state gets backed up by our backup software, CommVault, but I will probably do a Windows NTBackup for redundancy. Do I only need to back up the system state? Can someone please point me to the process of restoring the DNS from the backup? I am sure that I will not need it but I have to be prepared for anything that goes wrong. Lastly, if I set the scavenging on the SOA DC, I am guessing that all DC's will be affected for that zone because of replication. Will I only need to restore to the zones SOA DC in case of failure?

Summary:
1. Is my scavanging\aging plan good or is it flawed?
2. As a backoff procedure, do I only need to back up the system state? What else should I backup so that I can go back to prescavange 100%?
3. Verify that all scavange and restore should be done on zone SOA DNS server only.

Thanks all,
