a) man ifconfig
to learn the details usage of the command.
    eg:
To manually configure network connection for an interface: (Solaris)

        ifconfig hme0 plumb
        ifconfig hme0 xxx.xxx.xxx.x netmask 255.255.255.0 up
where xxx.xxx.xxx.x is the IP of the machine

b)  please read the instaructions in:
     http://www.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2/Q4.13.html

PS: after edit the /etc/system file, you need to reboot the box.

ok, b is partly answered ( full duplex mode config) , but still it says : "There are several ways of changing the default settings and force full-duplex mode"

configuring IP is easy, i wanted to know the details of flags for purpose of troubleshooting.

Not sure if this what are you looking for:
Status flags indicate as follows:

UP - The interface is marked up and sends and receives packets through the interface.

NOTRAILERS - A trailer is not included at the end of the Ethernet frame. Trailers were a method used in Berkeley UNIX versions that puts the header information at the end of the packet. This option is not supported in the Solaris environment but is provided for command-line backward compatibility.

RUNNING - The interface is recognized by the kernel.

MULTICAST - The interface supports a multicast address. l BROADCAST - The interface supports a broadcast address.

the flages values are definded in /usr/include/net/if.h file.

You might want to read the following docs:
"Solaris: Network Troubleshooting ":

i am not looking for basics, rather some error descriptions should be helpful.

ok, after much net surfing and some playing around with the interfaces, I have found most of the details, still not clear about 'RUNNING' flag though.
for example ,  I have an interface whose status is missing running like below:

ce5: flags=1000803<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 12
      inet 172.16.22.11 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 172.16.22.255
      ether 0:3:ba:b1:r2:d3

what should be the issue.

RUNNING - The interface is recognized by the kernel.
  see my comment in http:#19378421
It means that Solaris can recognize your NIC, but if your miss configured the network for the box, or miss configred the port/switch
you still could have problem access to the network from the box!

thats fine, just the last thing, how to get this kind of problem solved/troubleshoot when RUNNING is not visible, I just need an idea if its due to some particular settings (any new commands related to port configuration on server side )

by: yuzhPosted on 2007-07-01 at 23:08:14ID: 19401498

>how to get this kind of problem solved/troubleshoot when RUNNING is not visible,

It could be the interface was disable, eg someone run:
ifconfig ce5 download

You need to reenable it again

or
the netmask is wrong, check /etc/netmasks file,
or
/etc/hostname.interface is wrong

or
the port/switch setting is wrong
or
NIC hardward problem.
