The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SysPrep using BIOS Asset Tag for Machine Name

Tags: Microsoft, Windows, XP, SysPrep
Is It possible to use the Asset Tag from the BIOS as the Computer Name when Syspreping WinXP?

After a search on google, using  '%#!computer@asset_tag% as the Computer Name in sysprep.ini looked promising, but this didn't work.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

You can use a script at the first logon to do this or run a command from your sysprep answer file when sysprep runs after the restore.

Compname from http://www.willowhayes.co.uk should work.  Says it's for Windows 2000, but should work for 2000/XP

Thanks for the replies,

They're all HP Machines, so not sure if the first two will work. I'll have a look at the program from willowhayes....

Thanks again

The WMI solution should be more or less universal.
It is worth a try.

sorry to ask a silly question, you know you can change the asset tag name if you hit f10 on the system boot u0p to what ever you like?

01.10.2008 at 09:03AM PST, ID: 20628794
Yeah,  changing the asset tag isn't the problem, its getting minisetup to use it as the Computer Name that I'm having the problem with.

Thanks anyway!

Thanks Vorenus,
The script required a small modification but now works a treat. I've posted below for anyone with problem in the future. Save with a .vbs extension and add it to your commands to run at end of Sysprep.
