Question

Speed up startup

I need to get XP to start up as fast as possible from a Power On.   I tried running the Bootvis and also asked it to optimize,  it doesn't seem to help, It is still taking just as much time, only two items are selected in the startup.  

When I went the the Fast system startup document I realized I wasn't getting any info on the Boot Activity graph?  I tried both Next Boot and Next Boot & Driver Delays and checking the boot activity box and still nothing on that graph?  In addition I am a beginner and do well with step by step directions but the Fast system info from microsoft was too technical for me and assumed I know more.  Any tweaking suggestions that speed up the boot process will be appreciated.  I've attached the file bootvis created, oops sorry it won't take that type of file.  Thanks, Charlotte.

run msconfig from the run line line.  Then go to the startup tab and turn off anything that doesn't need to be on.  Also check the services in the managment console of the pc and turn off any unneeded services.

If you need a good reference for what each service does you can go to blackviper.com.  The site is chock full of goodies and has a great list of virtually every service for every OS out there.

Norton anti virus is whats slowing your startup process the most. how much ram do you have? you could uninstall norton and install AVG for even a free one just as good called antivir by avira.

if you want your computer faster overall then you need more ram in most cases because if you run out or even low on ram the page file goes up really high and makes your computer very sluggish. i attached my performance history to show that if your "Page File Usage History" is low then you know your computer has enough ram to run what is installed and running.

the second image i attached is just showing what takes up the most ram in the processes section.

I haven't gotten the extra RAM yet, but I think you are correct on that.  I know you were right on Norton because when I first ran the bootvis and it turned everything off in my start up, it booted pretty fast.  Then I did a few things and it slowed down and I wasnt sure what I had done, now I know, I turned Norton antivirus back on.  I assume there isn't any way around this other than to get a different virus software.  It expires in a month or so, so I'll have to check around.  I still don't know why the chart in boot activity graph was empty when I ran bootvis?
