The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Success with XP SP3

Before I install XP SP3, have any experts installed it and run it without a hitch? Any preparatory steps that should be done? It seems the gdi32.dll can cause some boot problems. Any increase or decrease in performance after SP3?

I downloaded the full Sp (300plus mb)

Just want to hear your feedback to avoid posting a problem here.

Always do a full backup, especially before installing major revisions. :-) I'd create a system restore point, too just to be sure.

No issues here to complain.  I would say its pretty stable.  The question would be are you running anything on that machine where a sp upgrade could cause instability?

I had no problems yet. Performance didn't make a difference. Generally SP3 is probably not necessary if you are current with your other updates though, as it basically is SP2 and accumulates the updates since then. New features that aren't included in the updates are usually not necessary and aren't many.

I had a problem with MS Office updates failing to install after Sp3. The following fixed the problem:

(type these commands one at a time from a command prompt)

net stop wuauserv    (this stops the update service)
      regsvr32 wuapi.dll
      regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
      regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
      regsvr32 wucltui.dll
      regsvr32 wups2.dll
      regsvr32 wups.dll
      regsvr32 wuweb.dll
net start wuauserv (this restarts the update service)
Accepted Solution

I have been running it since Beta / Release Candidacy and have had no issues.  However I have read the following regarding some OEM's (HP and the likes) and the images they've used on their machines causing trouble with XP SP3: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/05/13/xp_sp3_microsoft_blames_oems/

As mentioned by the very first poster, always take a backup before applying a Service Pack release.

Thanks for your comments. It seems there are no major problems with SP3 so I will install it and post any problems I run into.

I would recommend giving points to those who participated.  Your solution is no different than me telling you it was stable.  These people who participated in giving you insight are all volunteers, I would think its only fair to split some points to those who participated.  Just my thoughts...

cheers:)

It says I must award at least 20 per person but its only 50 points. How do I split it up so everyone gets a share?

lol no idea...im not worried about it:)

cheers

You could bump the points upwards to a multiple of 20, but I agree with robbhill that it's no problem either way. This thread is worth saving, however.

We had boot loop issues. This was our solution. Our issue was post installation boot loop, the windows splash screen with appear then reboot half way though. Safe mode was no good as well as all other options. We found if we unplugged the USB mouse and Keyboard the system booted up just fine. Lucky for us our MB has PS2 connections. We used a PS2 Mouse and KB. Uninstalled the USB devices listed in device manager rebooted then all was good. We didnt slip stream the XP SP3 folder so the SP2 drivers were reloaded upon the reboot. We could then plug in our mouse and keyboard with out issue. Side note all other USB devices worked fine prior to removing the USB drivers in device mgr. This issue was with specific MB (Foxconn 945G7MA-8K52H) I have found others with similar issues as ours not sure on the MB manufacture. Our Dell, Panasonic CFXX, and virtual machines didnt experience this or any other issue.
