Question

how do i edit the right side of vista's start menu (more than what the context menu's offer)

Asked by: WillThomason

I like the vista start menu, but i hate using the built in profile of vista to store my important documents and my media files. mainly because it seems cluttered to me and they keep making random folders in there that come back when i delete them which is ugly to me. However, i still want to use the My Pictures and My Documents and My Music links on the right side of the vista start menu to access the folders that i do keep my files at. For example when i click on my music it takes me to my profiles my music with sample music in it. I would instead like for it to take me to C:\Files\Music where i keep my music. I have not found a way to do this within windows yet except for changing the location, which in turn just makes my personal folder  a part of the user profile in vista, which i do not want. I am comfortable with editing the registry if anyone wants to give that a shot. Thanks.

You could create a shortcut in Your Vista public folder for C:\Files\Music

by: DolGuldurPosted on 2009-06-02 at 08:37:42ID: 24528060

I don't understand why changing the location of your music profile to C:\Files\Music doesn't suits you? Can you elaborate a bit more?

by: WillThomasonPosted on 2009-06-02 at 08:42:54ID: 24528108

oleggold: If i put the shortcut in their then i will have to click two things, i can do that normally by going to the shortcut on my desktop, i just want it to work on my start menu with one click.

dolguldur: i have done that before, and it does work but it makes my personal music folder turn into the profile music folder. Then it keeps adding a sample music folder and also when i am using random programs as i go throughout the days they will automatically start adding files into my personal music folder because they see it as the default place to keep music. I keep my music very organized and this irritates me to no end. This goes for the videos and documents folder also. I also would like to put a shortcut on the right side pane to go to my videos, and there isnt even an option to add that.

Thanks for your input,
Will

Anyone know yet? i am confortable editing the start menu, i really just want to take those right side links and customize them and redo them the way i like instead of having to go through windows...

Thanks
Will

Well, you could do it the easy way..  create a shortcut and add it to your Start Menu..  Once you create the shortcut, just drag it to your menu and drop it where you want it..

Someone actually wrote up some instructions..  :)

Those positions on my start menu are already full. I am wanting to edit or add shortcuts to my right side pane of the vista start menu, not the white left side. Again, thanks everyone for your suggestions but i am really looking for an answer to my question, not an alternative method. I just find it hard to believe we put a man on the moon but there isn't a way to fully customize the vista start menu's right side pane.

Thanks,
Will

This was intentional, as MS did not want anyone customizing the Right Side Menu..  This is the 'shell' side' of the menu and is pretty much nailed down to the list in the Advanced Menu Customize selection..  I believe they allowed System Builders to include their own link in XP, but have not seen it in Vista (or Windows 7 for that matter)..

The only way I know to do what you want is with a Custom Skin..  Stardock might do this for you..

I don't really want to use a custom skin as that takes up extra resources. And i am aware that microsoft didnt want me editing the right side of the start menu, but that doesn't mean it is impossible. Any more ideas on how to customize it, i have a feeling it is through the registry but i do not have enough knowledge on the subject myself.

No, I do not believe this can be done by a simple reg edit...

but, I found this interesting..  not sure if it will work for you, but I like the looks of it..

after reading it looks like it can show me more about the folders, but i dont think it will let me actually edit them without redirecting the profile.

Just looking for a workaround for your situation, as like I said before, editing the actual menu (right side) is a long shot..  Again, if it were a regedit, we would have nailed it already..

by: WillThomasonPosted on 2009-06-12 at 05:40:58ID: 24611557

on the bright side i think there is a large demand for this, and no one has answered it yet because i have looked extensively, thus if you figure it out you will be famous.

still nothing? has anyone got a clue on how to change the right side vista start menu shortcuts to be more customizable?

by: Fatal_ExceptionPosted on 2009-06-30 at 15:02:40ID: 24750050

you know, I came across this site a few days ago and thought of this thread...  not that it will do exactly what you wish with the Free Version...  but it sure does look interesting..

It appears that the Pro Version adds some more flexibility to the app..

Anyway, check it out...
