Question

multiple printer sessions in remote desktop

Asked by: Twizzler13a

I have a client that connects to a remote server using rdp. When trying to print there are multiple disconnected and broken printer sessions each time they connect. Each time someone connects it creates a new broken printer session. Right now there are at least 20 or more broken printer sessions in the printers/faxes area. Nobody can print because of this. Each user has their own username and password, the drivers match on both the client side and terminal server side.

The terminal server is Windows Server 2003 standard with sp2.

Is this a client side issue or a terminal server issue and what causes it? I have searched and searched and have found no solution for fixing this. My client does not have permissions to delete or clear out the rdp temp files so we can't try and fix it on our side. Unless of course someone can tell me what to do on the client side to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have found no solution to this issue.

When you say that your client doesn't have permission to delete the rdp temp files, is that becuase their user is not an Administrator?  It's highly unlikely that a fix for the issue that you have can be done without administrative access.

If you had administrative access, I'd suggest uninstalling the server's printer drivers and reinstalling them.  The other thing that I'd check is that the local RDP client has the map local printers on connection turned off.  It is possible that the local printer settings are interfering with the server printer settings.  Even if the printer is a "proper" network printer, the vast majority of printer drivers are programmed poorly.

If you don't have administrative access, you're pretty much stuck in the mud.  You can't do any real troubleshooting worthwhile without it.  I'd suggest that your client get the server administrator to fix the issue or hire someone who can.
